World Cup: Group D Preview

Germany will be tough to be beat so the race may be for second place in the group.

Germany is the favorite to win Group D and was one of five teams in the European region that went undefeated in qualifying.

In 2006 as the host nation, Germany finished 3rd and they have a solid squad again. They come up big in major tournaments and they will be tough to beat with such world-class players as Chelsea’s Michael Ballack, Bayern Munich’s Miroslav Klose, and Werder Bremen’s Mesut Oezil. They really have no big weaknesses, but they tend to come up short against elite teams, which they will not face until they make it out of Group D if they do so.

This is Serbia’s first appearance in the World Cup and they may be a surprise team, as they won their qualifying group, which included France. The Serbians have a solid defense anchored by Nemanja Vidic and Branislav Ivanovic and they will be tough to score on. They do not have a great midfield and they lack a go-to striker, so they may have to rely on their defense to make it out of Group D. The defense is set and the Serbians are set to make a run if Milan Jovanovi of Standard Leige and Milos Krasic CSKA Moscow can produce some offense.

Ghana is making their second straight World Cup appearance and they looked very strong in qualifying and have some home field advantage on African soil. They have a great midfield led by the world-class players of Michael Essien of Chelsea and Sulley Muntari of Inter Milan that can set up the strikers, but unfortunately the strikers are not very strong. The defense is a concern, especially their central defense. Wigan G Richard Kingson may have to carry a heavy load since the Ghana D is mediocre at best.

Just like Ghana, Australia is making their second straight appearance in the World Cup and that 2006 squad has not changed much from this time around. That is their strength, as the Australians play great team soccer and they are especially strong on defense. Their main weakness is their offense, as they lack a go-to striker that is a danger to score every time they tough the ball. Tim Cahill of Everton will counted on for offense and Mark Schwarzer of Fulham is the anchor of the defense for Australia in goal.
