Player Prop Bets for Super Bowl 54

Super Bowl 54 is set to take place on February 2, 2020, at Hard Rock Stadium between the AFC champion Kansas City Chiefs and the NFC champion San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs are slight 1.5-point favorites for the big game with the total coming in at 54.5 points. However, there are plenty of other betting opportunities outside of the conventional side and totals and this article will take a look at player props.

A player prop is a wager on a potential outcome for a player during the game. These options include markets such as the OVER/UNDER number of passing yards by a quarterback or which player will find the end zone for a touchdown. With such a wide range of betting opportunities for player props, many books have different options so it’s good to check out the variety and Odds Shark has put together a list of the best prop betting sites.

Quarterback Props for Super Bowl 54

There are several options for quarterback props, primarily the OVER/UNDERs for passing yards, passing touchdowns and pass completions. Essentially, you are betting on the success, or lack thereof, of one or both signal-callers.

The wager I like here is UNDER 305.5 passing yards (-105) for Kansas City QB Patrick Mahomes. The 2018 MVP has eclipsed 305.5 passing yards just three times over the last 11 games and is going against a San Francisco team that surrendered the fewest passing yards per game in the NFL at 169.2.

The Ultimate Guide to Super Bowl 54 Prop Betting

Receiver Props for Super Bowl 54

Similar to the QB props, you can wager on receiver props like OVER/UNDER receiving yards and receptions as a whole. This prop can be a little more difficult, since there are several different receivers who can have a big game or a quiet game on any given night against different defensive schemes.

That said, I like Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce OVER six receptions at -150. Kelce, a safety valve for Patrick Mahomes, has had at least six catches in 11 of his 18 games this season and has a knack for creating space against the men who cover him.

Rushing Props for Super Bowl 54

Rushing props are centered around the running backs and how well they perform in the big game. These markets can be a little tricky because the game plan is very often dictated by the score. Typically, teams will abandon the run if they are trailing in the game because when you run the ball, the clock keeps ticking and a team’s opportunity to gain a lot of yardage is diminished compared to throwing the ball. All that being said, sometimes the best approach for rushing props is to start with the team you believe will win the game and then circle back to these options.

I think the San Francisco 49ers will win the game and I’ve written an article on the three reasons why that will be the outcome. Based on that, the rushing prop I like is OVER 69.5 yards for Raheem Mostert (-150). The Niners tailback exploded for 220 yards and four touchdowns on 29 totes in the conference championship game against Green Bay. As well, Kansas City surrendered an average of 128.2 rushing yards per game this season, the seventh-most in the league. Now, I must caution you to keep an eye on the injury report because Tevin Coleman, the lead running back for the Niners, suffered a dislocated shoulder in that Green Bay game. If he is good to play, obviously Mostert won’t be used as much and this prop would be dead in the water, so wait until closer to kickoff.

For a look at the three reasons why Kansas City will win, check out Gilles Gallant’s article.

Defensive/Special Teams Props for Super Bowl 54

Sportsbooks will typically group defense and special team props together, providing markets on total punts, points from kickers, sacks and tackles plus assists. When looking at rushing props, I suggested you side with the team that you expect to win if you are looking for an OVER. As for the kickers, examining the game’s total is your best approach. If you believe it will be a high-scoring affair, the OVER kicking points may be a good wager. However, if you think defense will shine, the OVER on punts could be profitable.

I’m going to look at a defensive player prop instead and I’m looking at OVER 5.5 total tackles and assists by Kansas City linebacker Damien Wilson at -110. The 26-year-old has had six or more total tackles in nine of his 18 games this season and has racked up 15 in two playoff contests. As a strong-side linebacker, I anticipate him covering George Kittle over the top as well as clogging up the middle on the run game and I think he should have plenty of opportunities to drag the ball carrier to the turf.

Touchdown Scorers for Super Bowl 54

A touchdown scorer prop is exactly what it sounds like, playing a wager on which player will score a rushing or receiving touchdown. That is important when looking at a quarterback with enticing plus-money odds but this prop doesn’t include passing touchdowns.

One player I like to find the end zone in the big game is San Francisco fullback Kyle Juszczyk at +550. He is a tremendous blocker but is underrated around the goal line, catching seven balls on seven targets in the red zone this year. Under the big lights, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a trick play called to get the Niners fullback a touchdown.

What is a prop bet?

A Super Bowl prop is a bet on the occurrence or non-occurrence of certain player, team or event milestones that may not directly correlate to the outcome of the game. For example, you could bet on the number of yards a running back will rush for or the number of sacks a defensive end will record.

What do the plus (+) and minus (-) signs mean in Super Bowl betting?

When you visit a sportsbook, you’ll notice odds will be followed by + or -. Depending on the type of bet, these symbols are used to designate the favorite and underdog. Faves will always have the minus sign and dogs will have the plus sign.

For example, if you were making a moneyline bet, the odds would look like this:

  • Kansas City Chiefs -125
  • San Francisco 49ers +105

Here, the Chiefs are the favorite and the 49ers are the underdog.

However, with props, there isn’t always a fave or dog. In this case, it’s more about probability. Let’s say you want to bet on quarterbacks. Prop odds would look like this:

Which QB will Have the Most Passing Yards?
PlayerOdds
Patrick Mahomes-160
Jimmy Garoppolo+175

In this case, you would look at probability. Oddsmakers are predicting that Mahomes has a 61.54 percent chance of having the most passing yards and Jimmy G has a 36.36 percent shot of having more passing yards.

Our Odds Calculator will show you what you’d win based on the odds, amount bet and what the possibility of each option is.
