Bossa Nova Kid Continues Blazing Run to Overtake Schalter for Team OddsShark Lead

Sometimes the most unlikely wins in the NFL can mean the most depending on the stakes. For Paulo Antunes, who would have thought a seemingly meaningless field goal by the bumbling New York Giants with 1:38 remaining would cover the spread against the Oakland Raiders and help him go a perfect 5-0 in Week 13 of the Super Contest? A team that was about to fire their head coach still managed to do something right for some who backed them as 8.5-point road underdogs in a 24-17 loss at Oakland.

With his fifth victory of the week, Antunes (aka Bossa Nova Kid) moved one point ahead of Ty Schalter, whom he shared the lead with a week ago and who went an impressive 4-1 himself. Schalter’s lone loss came on the Philadelphia Eagles as 6-point road favorites versus the Seattle Seahawks. The Eagles fell 24-10 and saw their winning streak end at nine.

Regardless, the top two members of Team OddsShark continued their torrid pace, and both of them remain in contention to cash among the Top 50 contestants at the end of the world’s largest football handicapping contest. The team as a whole also put together one of its best weeks, as did many in the entire record field of 2,748 contestants.

The Top 5 consensus picks overall went 5-0 while the team’s five most popular picks were 5-0 as well. In addition to Antunes, two other members of the group went 5-0 too, so Mike Cole and Ryan Fowler deserve props for their impressive performances. Cole and Fowler each needed the Cincinnati Bengals to hold on and cover the spread against the Pittsburgh Steelers as 5-point home underdogs on Monday Night Football. The Bengals were up 17-3 at halftime and lost 23-20 to the Steelers as time expired.

Fowler is now within one point of escaping the cellar of the group standings, and five other team members helped themselves by going 4-1 along with Schalter, including Kelly Stewart, Rob Pizzola, Dan Lyons, Matt Ufford and Anthony Riccobono. Just six of the 25 members posted a losing mark in Week 13, with all of them going 2-3.
