Vernava Leads Team OddsShark During Historically Bad Super Contest Week

In the nearly three and a half seasons that Team OddsShark has participated in the Super Contest, never before have the members struggled with their NFL picks like they did in Week 7 of this season. Then again, you could make an argument that it was the toughest ever in the history of the world’s largest pro football handicapping contest.

It was so bad for the team that leader Ty Schalter went 0-4-1 following a 5-0 week and still retained his spot atop the group standings. Just one of the 25 members posted a winning record, and that was Michaela Vernava, who went a perfect 5-0 picking five favorites, three of which were on the road and ended up winning by 17 points or more. Week 7 was not a good time to pick underdogs, and that is a major understatement. Not only did the team’s top eight consensus picks (seven dogs) go 0-8 against the spread, but in the contest overall, the top 12 consensus picks (eight dogs) went 0-11-1 ATS.

The good news is that those who fared well in Week 7 were able to make up some ground on the overall leaders as they attempt to win a grand prize worth more than $1 million for the very first time. The top contestant heading into Week 7 was Tunnel Vision, who went 1-4 after the Washington Redskins failed to come through as 5-point road underdogs against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. In fact, the Redskins let down 681 entrants of the 2,748 in the field, including six from the team.

The Green Bay Packers and San Francisco 49ers were the biggest disappointments for Team OddsShark, selected 15 and 13 times, respectively. Both were listed as home underdogs, with the Packers playing their first game without quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Green Bay fell 26-17 to the New Orleans Saints as a 5.5-point dog while San Francisco was blown out 40-10 by the Dallas Cowboys, who were 6.5-point chalk.

Besides Vernava, Paulo Antunes also deserves a shoutout for going 2-2-1 and moving into sole possession of second place in the team standings behind Schalter with 21 out of a possible 35 points. Schalter has a half-point lead and is tied for 79th overall.
