Bettman & Why the NHL is so Tough to Bet

Listening to the 1-on-1 panel with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman at the Sloan Sports Analytics  Conference in Boston on Friday, it was easy to get the impression this guy suffers fools worse than most.

“This is incredibly annoying,” he said, clearly agitated by an issue with feedback to his mic, which wasn’t audible to the audience.

Huge Central Division Battle Friday

Jonathan Toews Chicago Blackhawks Jamie Benn Tyler Seguin Dallas Stars NHL

The race for first place in the Central Division gets more and more intriguing each day and with the two top teams in the division squaring off Friday night, the intrigue is sure to get kicked up a notch. The Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars are even on points, but one team will leave the American Airlines Center as the Central leaders after the final horn.

Shark Bites
  • Five of the previous seven meetings between these two have gone OVER 5.5 goals.
  • The Blackhawks are 0-4 SU in their last four games versus the Central Division.
  • The Stars are 1-4 SU in their last four home games.

Online shop Bovada is presently offering both the Blackhawks and Stars at -115 in moneyline markets. The total is tabbed at 5.5 with OVER priced at -110 and UNDER presently -120.

Both teams enter Friday’s schedule coming off a loss with the Hawks losing 3-2 to another division contender, the St. Louis Blues, while the Stars found themselves on the wrong end of a 4-3 decision to the Montreal Canadiens.

The loss to the Habs was Dallas’ eighth in its last 11 games but it has had success versus the Hawks recently. The Stars won the last meeting with the Blackhawks by a score of 4-2 back on February 11 and have won four of the previous five. They have lit the lamp at a frenetic pace in meetings withe Chicago, averaging just under 4 goals scored per game against their division foes.

The Hawks haven’t played much better of late as the loss to the Blues was their seventh in the past 12 games. In fact, of the three teams at the top of the division, Chicago has the worst record versus teams from within the group. The Hawks enter Friday’s tilt with Dallas 11-9-2 versus Central opponents this season while Dallas is 14-7-2 and St. Louis is 15-7-3.

Blues Look to Extend Win Streak to Five

Vladimir Tarasenko St. Louis Blues NHL

The St. Louis Blues are suddenly the hottest team in the NHL and take a four-game winning streak into Friday’s contest with the Anaheim Ducks in a potential Western Conference playoff matchup.

Shark Bites
  • Four of the last six meetings between the two clubs have been UNDER 5 goals.
  • Three of the last four Blues games have been OVER 5 goals.
  • The Ducks are 6-1 SU in their last seven games on the road.

Online shop Bovada presently has the Blues as slight -120 favorites in moneyline markets while the Ducks are -110. The total is tabbed at 5 with OVER priced at -110 and UNDER at -120.

The Blues’ four-game streak is the longest current run in the NHL and that surge has them right in the thick of the race in the Central Division. The Blues are just one point back of both the Chicago Blackhawks and Dallas Stars, who play in Texas Friday night.

The Ducks have followed an 11-game winning streak with a two-game losing skid and have dropped out of first place in the Pacific Division. Anaheim is coming off a 3-0 shutout courtesy of the Colorado Avalanche in its last effort and is a middling 7-7-2 versus the Central Division this season.

The pair have met once already this season with the Ducks skating to a 4-3 victory back on January 8 on home ice.

Panthers, Senators Lacking Scoring Punch

The Florida Panthers and Ottawa Senators have historically had a difficult time finding the back of the net against one another, with the UNDER going 6-2 in the past eight between the two clubs. Through those eight games the Sens and Panthers have combined for five goals on four occasions, which makes the opening total of five a little scary though.

Ottawa has been fledgling so far this month, with the Senators winning just one of their five games so far in March. Despite struggling to win SU, puckline could be an attractive alternative as four of the Sens five games this month were decided by one goal.

The Panthers have been a solid play in Florida as the team has has gone 14-6 in their past 20 games at BB&T Center. However, the Panthers have traditionally faltered when hosting the Senators as they are 8-21 in their past 28 games hosting Ottawa.

Sharks Dominating Series With Devils

The New Jersey Devils have had a season to forget and things won’t get any easier on Thursday when they face off against a squad that’s historically had their number in the San Jose Sharks. In the last six matchups between the teams, the Sharks are a sizzling 5-1. San Jose has also been beating up against weaker competition as of late, posting a 5-1 record versus teams with losing records.

Shark Bites
  • The Devils are 2-6 SU in their last eight games on the road.
  • The Sharks are 5-1 SU in their last six games against teams with losing records.
  • The total has gone OVER in seven of the Sharks' last 10 games after a win.

The Sharks, who opened as -245 favorites on the moneyline, may be a little too pricey for some, but totals bettors will be interested to know the OVER has gone 3-0 in the Devils’ last five when facing a total of 5.0. That’s the spot they’re in tonight.

For some reason, San Jose hasn’t been able to get the job done in their home arena. The Sharks are a measly 12-14-3 at SAP Center, and will open a three-game homestand tonight.
