UFC 227: Johnson vs Cejudo 2 Betting Odds

The UFC makes its way to the Staples Center for UFC 227 on August 4 to features two rematches in the main event and co-main event. Below the headline is a battle for the flyweight title between the champion Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson and the challenger Henry “The Messenger” Cejudo as they run back their UFC 197 bout.

Johnson was the victor in the first battle with Cejudo and at Sportsbook he is the -600 heavy favorite to repeat the result from UFC 197.  The Messenger gets his opportunity to show off his improvements from that loss specifically in his striking game and is coming back at +400.

Mighty Mouse’s -600 line may seem a little low for frequent UFC bettors as the flyweight phenom has been the favorite in 11 straight fights and has been a -700 fave on average through those 11 bouts. In the first clash between these two men, Johnson was a -350 favorite which was his lowest fave odds since he fought Joseph Benavidez for the second time in 2013, that fight also resulted in a Mighty Mouse win by T/KO.

The First Meeting

Arguably the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, Mighty Mouse, made short work of the 2008 Olympic gold medalist ending the fight with a first-round TKO. Cejudo had a glimpse of success against Johnson early, dragging the champion to the mat with his elite level striking, however, Johnson was calm and collected getting back to his feet quickly. Following the takedown, Mighty Mouse engaged The Messenger into a Muay Thai clinch where he landed aggressive knees and elbows ultimately finishing the scrap.

What has changed and How will the Rematch Play Out?

Since their first meeting, the two fighters have earned more victories and shown improvements in their games. Johnson rolled off another three wins and is now on a 13-fight winning streak, and was the Sportsbook of the Submission of the Year award with his takedown to armbar submission over Ray Borg at UFC 216. We have not seen the 31-year-old in action since that UFC 216 appearance as he has been rehabbing from shoulder surgery. The Kentucky native never fails to entertain and is always evolving, providing his opponents more than a handful to deal with.

Following the TKO loss to DJ, Cejudo dropped his next bout by split decision against Joseph Benavidez. The California native took nine months off to regroup following back-to-back losses and Wilson Reis was the victim of the rejuvenated Cejudo. The 31-year-old returned to action showing drastically improved striking combined with his above average wrestling and completely swarmed Reis. It was shortly into the second round that Cejudo landed a piston-like right hand that ended the fight in its tracks. The former challenger then earned a unanimous decision win over Sergio Pettis and the rematch was on.

Mighty Mouse is the -600 favorite for the rematch vs The Messenger and to bet against Johnson is just flushing your money down the toilet. Although Cejudo has shown improved striking in his last two bouts he simply is outclassed by Johnson who is just on another level within the flyweight division. DJ’s last defeat came in the bantamweight division against the longtime champion Dominick Cruz in 2011.
