Can Cerrone Regain His Footing Against Streaking Medeiros?

It seemed like Donald Cerrone was quickly going to become a contender in the welterweight division after making the leap from lightweight. But after a blistering start to his time at 170 pounds, “Cowboy” has dropped three straight – two of which saw the typically strong-chinned Cerrone get knocked out. Now he will try to get back on the right track when he takes on Yancy Medeiros in the main event at UFC Fight Night 126 in Austin, Texas.

Shark Bites
  • Donald Cerrone is 10-2 in his last 12 fights as favorite.
  • Yancy Medeiros has fought just one fighter with a winning UFC record since moving up to welterweight.
  • Eight of Donald Cerrone’s last nine fights have ended via stoppage.

After languishing in the lightweight division, Medeiros has found his true weight at 170 pounds. Since making the jump to welterweight, “The Kid” is 3-0 with all three victories by way of stoppage. The Hawaiian’s relentless pace and size have broken all of the opponents he has faced since the shift in weight, something that could be an issue for Cerrone, who typically needs space to strike.

When you look at each of Cerrone’s losses at welterweight, they have been to aggressive fighters who look to push the pace. Jorge Masvidal, Robbie Lawler and Darren Till were all able to keep Cerrone backpedaling and gave him little room to work. When afforded space, Cerrone has one of the most diverse and precise striking attacks in MMA – and is especially renowned for his stellar kicking game.
