To many, Georges St-Pierre is the greatest fighter to ever grace the sport of mixed martial arts. However, there are others who claim that “Rush” has yet to prove he is even the best in his own weight class.
Ben Askren has destroyed every opponent put in front of him throughout his 18 professional fights among promotions such as Bellator and ONE FC. For reasons that have been widely speculated, Askren was never signed by the UFC and eventually retired with a flawless 18-0 record with one no contest.
But at just 33 years old, Askren has not completely ruled out the possibility of returning to the sport – assuming that he could get the chance to take on GSP.
“My main motivation is to prove I’m No. 1 in the world,” Askren told MMAJunkie. “I’ve been No. 1 for the past five years, and I’ve unfortunately never had the chance to prove that fight. It’s the one thing that interests me.”
And though the MMA community seems intrigued by the idea, the bout ever coming to fruition seems like a long shot. Askren has had issues with the UFC in the past and there is zero possibility this fight happens outside the Octagon. In addition, GSP told Ariel Helwani that he would prefer that Askren was more “exposed to the public … Otherwise you fight a guy who’s extremely dangerous who nobody cares about, who nobody knows who he is.”
With all that taken into account, online sportsbook Bovada has opened odds on whether GSP and Askren will meet inside the Octagon by the end of 2018. “No” is the overwhelming -6000 favorite with “Yes” coming back at +1200.
Is St-Pierre right in saying that Askren is relatively unknown to the casual MMA fan? Yes. But St-Pierre himself has also admitted that it would be great for his legacy to fight Askren. Ultimately, most fans are not holding their breath on this one but stranger things have happened in combat sports.
