Strikeforce Challengers 10 and Bellator 24

The month of August 2010 is an action-packed time for MMA fans and that translates to a busy month for the people setting MMA lines.

Besides being spoiled with UFC 117 and UFC 118 in August, fans will also be able to watch Season 3 of the Bellator Fighting Championships get underway plus the latest Challenger Card from Strikeforce.

Bellator and Strikeforce have finalized their fight cards for this week’s action, and both events include female tournament action. Bellator 24 kicks off Season 3 on August 12 at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Hollywood, Fla. The card will feature a collection of fights that will include top female tournament action, a big name matchup, and the usual Bellator local fighter undercard.

The main card will be headlined by a non-title fight between Bellator Middleweight Champion Hector Lombard (26-2-1) and former NFL player Herbert "Whisper" Goodman (15-8). Bellator will also look to take full advantage of their big new signing by putting pound-for pound No.1 female Megumi Fujii up against world No. 8 at 115 lbs Angela Magana in the first round of the 115lb female tournament. The other first-round female tournament fight will pit world No.6-ranked 125lb Lynn “Lights Out” Alvarez against No.7-ranked 115lb Jessica Aguilar.

Local Bellator fighters getting a chance to strut their stuff in their Florida backyard include Yves Edwards, Luis Palomino, Nico Parella, Efrain Ruiz, Moyses Gabin, Frank Carillo, Eric Luke, and Chino Duran. On August 13 Strikeforce will be in Phoenix, Arizona at the Dodge Theater with their Challengers X fight card. The main event will be Joe Riggs (32-11) fighting at a 182lb catch-weight against Louis Taylor (6-1).

Despite never fighting professionally, Ryan Couture (son of MMA legend Randy “The Natural” Couture), will get second billing on the card against Lucas Stark (2-4) in a welterweight bout. Challengers X will also have two opening-round 135lb female tournament fights. The eventual winner of the tournament will become the 135lb top contender and will get her shot at Sarah Kaufman’s Welterweight strap some time later in the year. Hitomi Akano (15-7), Carina Damm (15-3), Maiju Kujala (4-1), and Miesha Tate (9-2) will all see action on the card, with matchups determined after the August 12 weigh-ins.
