UFC 192: Cormier Big Fave vs Gustafsson

UFC 192 will see Daniel Cormier defend his light heavyweight title against Alexander Gustafsson, with DC as a sizable -340 favorite to retain the strap according to 5Dimes.

“Jon Jones' run notwithstanding, historically, the 205-lbs. belt has been a very difficult one to defend. So on the surface, it may seem that the price on Cormier is inflated here,” says UFC commentator Jon Anik. “But I don't necessarily see it that way.”

After Jones was stripped of his title due to felony hit-and-run charges, DC faced off against the hard-hitting Anthony Johnson for the newly vacated belt at UFC 187.

“What Cormier was able to do against Anthony Johnson back in May was just remarkable,” Anik says. “Johnson is the single biggest power threat in the sport and DC took his best strikes without much issue.”

Gustafsson has been slumping as of late dropping two of his past three fights. ‘The Mauler’ is coming into this title fight coming off a loss, which is a rarity especially in the modern UFC.

Despite acknowledging Gustafsson’s “special strik[ing]” ability, Anik seems intrigued about Gustafsson’s mental state.

“It'll be interesting to see where [Gustafsson’s] head is at, given the fact that he contemplated retirement after his loss to Johnson in January.”

Is Cormier Worth the Juice?

The biggest question is whether or not laying anything on Cormier is worth it or if you fade the champ and look towards Gustafsson.

“There's just no way I could possibly fade DC here after what he was able to do in May and what he's been able to do against all sorts of different challenges in his career,” Anik says.

“This is a guy who has manhandled heavyweights and now has mastered getting his body primed at light heavyweight. The price is big but I think Cormier deserves the bloated favorite distinction this weekend.”
