I hope you like violence because Robbie Lawler and Donald Cerrone are scheduled to clash at UFC 214 in an all-action bout that has “fight of the year” written all over it. We haven’t seen Lawler since he dropped the welterweight title to Tyron Woodley last July while Cerrone is coming off a tough loss to Jorge Masvidal.
‘Ruthless’ Robbie Lawler opened as a -145 favorite with ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone coming back at +115. Assuming this line stays steady, this will be the first time Cerrone has entered a fight as an underdog since his title loss to Rafael dos Anjos in December 2015.
Lawler bloomed late in his career, taking several years to accumulate experience that has been a valuable asset to his style. He is more crafty than flashy and looks to counter-strike with his fast, heavy hands when striking. Lawler is vicious in the clinch and his good takedown defense allows him to punish opponents who try to shoot.
Cerrone wants to break down his opponent with a mixture of pace and vicious leg kicks. Very few fighters in the UFC can cut down an opponent the way that Cerrone can. The Denver, Colorado native is also a lethal submission specialist if the fight goes to the mat.
