UFC 239: Gadelha vs Markos Preview and Pick

Claudia Gadelha (-240) vs Randa Markos (+190)

It’s been a fall from grace of late for Claudia Gadelha (16-4), who was once looked at as a top-two strawweight, unbeaten prior to her UFC debut and coming in with beautiful BJJ. That was then, this is now – she has lost two of her last three fights and frankly looked really bad in all three. With a loss here, she would become just a .500 fighter in the UFC at 5-5. Gadelha does seem to be aware of the changes needed in her game, vowing that fans will see “a much smarter Claudia” in this fight.

This is a great pairing by UFC matchmakers as both women are well versed in wrestling, which is a nice change of pace for Gadelha, whose last three opponents were much more striker-oriented. There’s no doubt that she has faced the better competition over their careers and while she’s lost two out of three, three of her four career losses have come against Joanna Jedrzejczyk and Jessica Andrade.

Randa Markos (9-7-1) put her wrestling on display in her last fight against Angela Hill, stopping Hill by submission in Round 1, earning her performance of the night and marking the fourth time in her career she has won via an armbar. Markos has been much better than her record indicates, but she has essentially alternated wins and losses dating back to October 2013. This one will surely be closely contested and should make for a great chain wrestling back-and-forth style of fight where Gadelha will need to be on the lookout for the armbar of Markos in transition.

Because of her name value, Claudia Gadelha has been someone I’ve looked to bet against in recent fights, not to mention the current form of her game just isn’t worth this price. Markos is so inconsistent it’s hard to justify a play on her, but everything has its price – if she is able to handle the grappling of Gadelha, she’s a very live underdog in this spot.
