Amanda Nunes (-400) Vs Holly Holm (+300)

Not many fighters on the planet have enjoyed a rise to fame the way Amanda Nunes (17-4) has, with the exception perhaps of Holly Holm (12-4). Granted, Nunes’ success has been much more consistent and has been sustained for longer but Holm knows what it’s like to shock the world and become a household name overnight.

This is a fascinating matchup from a narrative and style perspective. Let’s start with Holly Holm, who I’m not surprised is this big an underdog. But Holm has defied the odds before, putting an end to the reign of Ronda Rousey. On the feet, she is one of the few who can give Nunes fits.

Holm is a kickboxer by trade and I would certainly classify her as a specialist in that area. She is more than capable of generating power from both her hands and feet, and her timing is the best in the division from a purely technical standpoint, which means one thing: she’s deadly when put in the position of being a counterpuncher.

Holm is much more capable and comfortable when she can use her footwork to take advantage of an opponent’s sloppy form or technique, but she is often far too timid inside the Octagon and psyches herself out of a fight by waiting for the perfect moment that never arises. Valentina Shevchenko employed this same style en route to a split-decision loss against Nunes. That fight should provide the blueprint Holm needs to unseat The Lioness.

That’s certainly easier said than done right now, however. Amanda Nunes proved she is indeed the best women’s mixed martial artist on the planet with her victory over Cris “Cyborg” Justino. No fighter has more weapons at her disposal nightly and the way she is able to blend striking and wrestling hasn’t been seen in the sport, ever. On top of that, she is a black belt in BJJ. There just aren’t many flaws in her game at the moment and she adds constant pressure.

On the surface, it seems crazy to go against Nunes right now but Holm’s style of counterpunching is the opposite of Cyborg’s pressure and if Nunes doesn’t plan for it, Holm can shock the world again. Much like we saw with Jessica Eye and Valentina Shevchenko – and could see with Jones vs Santos – Holm is eventually going to have to let herself go and go for broke. If she can pick the right moment to strike, the underdog has a real chance to come through.

Pick: Holly Holm via knockout
