UFC 239: Yadong vs Perez Odds, Preview and Pick

Christian Pina is a professional sports bettor and host of InsideVegas on the Sports Gambling Podcast Network as well as a contributor for CP Sports. He has provided a breakdown and pick for UFC 239.

Song Yadong (-225) vs Alejandro Perez (+175)

This fight was originally scheduled for UFC 235 in March, but Song Yadong (14-4) pulled out of that fight for an undisclosed reason. Cody Stamann stepped in on short notice to give Alejandro Perez (21-7-1) his first loss in his last seven fights.

Not many UFC fighters this side of Katelyn Chookagian win more fights they probably shouldn’t on judges’ scorecards than Perez, and when you see a plus sign next to his odds, it’s genuinely a good idea to take them. Over his last six fights, Perez has lost just once, in the March 2 bout against Stamann.

Perez is a former Ultimate Fighter Latin America winner and has mastered the point-fighting style judges like to see. Early in his career, though, he knocked out nine opponents and submitted five others before adapting his style. It’s a hard concept to wonder if someone can consistently benefit from poor judging, but his fights against Wineland, Soukhamthath and Albert Morales could very easily be three losses on his record.

It doesn’t seem fair to call Song Yadong a lifelong mixed martial artist at 21 years old, but he started studying martial arts at the age of 10 and won a gold medal at the Hebei Sanshou Championships at 12. He enters the fight undefeated in his UFC career with three straight wins and is electric yet powerful on the feet. He has five career wins by knockout and three more by submission, so he is incredibly well rounded for his age.

Yadong will need a complete performance in this one as Perez’s style can be incredibly frustrating, something straight out of an Elias Theodorou script, and he can’t be baited into knockout hunting. It’s a huge test for Yadong and the price is certainly a little wide for my taste. Perez has all the experience in the world to draw from while Yadong hasn’t faced much adversity in his young UFC career to this point. But he has shown he can adapt to any style and get a win whichever way he needs to.

I have a hard time betting against experience, and with this step up in competition for Yadong, I’m willing to make him prove to me he’s ready against someone with a notable history of winning controversial decisions.
