UFC Fight Night 167: Anderson vs Blachowicz 2 Odds and Picks

UFC Fight Night 167: Odds and Picks

For the first time in almost six years, the UFC returns to New Mexico as the Octagon will be set up at the Santa Ana Star Center for UFC Fight Night 167: Anderson vs Blachowicz 2. This main event has all the makings of a No. 1 contender fight for the light heavyweight title with the American, Corey “Overtime” Anderson, coming in as a -210 favorite while the Poland native, Jan Blachowicz, is a +170 underdog.

UFC Fight Night 167: Anderson vs Blachowicz
  • Date/Time: February 15, 8 p.m. ET
  • Location: Rio Rancho, New Mexico
  • Arena: Santa Ana Star Center
  • Where to Watch: ESPN+

Corey Anderson vs Jan Blachowicz

A winning streak will come to an end in the main event as Anderson (-210) lays his four-fight streak on the line, while Blachowicz (+170) eyes his third win in a row. Most recently, Overtime scored a first-round knockout over Johnny Walker, stopping the hype train and earning his first knockout win since 2016 and just the third of his 14-fight UFC career. Blachowicz has won six of his last seven fights, falling only to former title challenger Thiago Santos, and has won back-to-back bouts over former middleweights Chris Weidman and Jacare Souza.

This bout features a clash of styles. Anderson is a high-level wrestler averaging 4.98 takedowns per 15 minutes and has landed multiple takedowns in nine of his 14 UFC fights. Meanwhile, Blachowicz has landed just one takedown over his last four fights, preferring to keep the fight on the feet where he can exchange hands. These two met at UFC 191 in 2015 and it was Anderson who was able to implement his game plan, taking Blachowicz to the canvas four times en route to a unanimous-decision victory.

Prediction: Corey Anderson (-210) via decision

Diego Sanchez vs Michel Pereira

Coming off his first loss in the UFC and making his third walk to the Octagon, Michel “Demolidor” Pereira (-165) is set to lock horns with veteran Diego “The Nightmare” Sanchez (+135). Pereira had a three-fight winning streak, all knockouts, that bled into his UFC debut, but he suffered a unanimous-decision defeat against Tristan Connelly in September. Sanchez, on the other hand, is making his 31st UFC appearance, with his debut coming at TUF 1 in 2005. He is coming off a unanimous-decision loss to Michael Chiesa last July.

Pereira is a wild fighter with big explosive movements that look flashy but have a low probability of landing. He throws flying knees, and propels himself off the cage with a lot of power. However, it burns up a lot of energy, a tendency that was on full display in his loss to Connelly as he faded late in the first round and never had the push the rest of the fight. That’s a red flag going against Sanchez, who is pedal to the metal for as long as a fight will go and has relied on his wrestling recently, landing eight takedowns over his last three fights.

Prediction: Diego Sanchez (+135) via decision

Montana De La Rosa vs Mara Romero Borella

Montana De La Rosa (-170) had her four-fight winning streak snapped her last time out when she fell by unanimous decision to Andrea Lee last June. Also coming off a defeat is Mara “Maravilla” Romero Borella (+140), who suffered a third-round TKO loss to Lauren Murphy last August and is now 2-2 in the Octagon.

De La Rosa is a strong wrestler who averages 2.69 takedowns per 15 minutes and has landed seven over her last two bouts. On the canvas, the Texas native is relentless in looking for the submission and eight of her 10 pro wins have ended in that manner. Her striking is a little basic, pawing away with a jab and looking to fire her strong right hand, but she doesn’t have a ton of power or confidence in her boxing. Borella, on the other hand, is a much more active striker, relying a lot on her leg kicks to slow down her opponents’ movements, but she only lands 35 percent of her strike attempts.

Prediction: Montana De La Rosa (-170) via decision

Brok Weaver vs Kazula Vargas

Making his Octagon debut and looking to extend his six-fight winning streak is Brok “Chata Tuska” Weaver (-280), who earned a contract in Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series last August. Aiming to spoil Weaver’s big moment and score his first triumph in the UFC is Kazula Vargas (+220), who lost his debut by decision to Alex da Silva Coelho last August.

Weaver is an aggressive fighter who closes the distance, backing his opponents against the cage where he varies his attack between striking and grappling. He does a good job throwing combinations but doesn’t have a ton of pop behind his punches, rather just touching to score. Vargas is also quite aggressive, loading up on heavy strikes that have seen him earn six pro knockouts. However, his power strikes often leave him off balance and vulnerable to getting taken down, which happened three times in his UFC debut.

Prediction: Brok Weaver (-280) via decision

Rogerio Bontorin vs Ray Borg

After earning a UFC contract in Dana White’s Tuesday Night Contender Series Brazil, Rogerio Bontorin (+125) followed that up with two wins inside the Octagon, including his first finish his last time out in August. Looking to slow down the surging newcomer is former title challenger Ray “The Tazmexican Devil” Borg (-155), who scored his first victory since 2017 in his last time out in July. In between those wins for Borg were two defeats, one in a title fight with Demetrious Johnson, the other a decision loss to Casey Kenney in March 2019.

Borg is a fantastic grappler, averaging 3.66 takedowns per 15 minutes and landing 13 over his two bouts in 2019. As far as his striking goes, the Tazmexican Devil is very light on his feet, getting close to his opponents so that they will throw at him and he can counter with a straight or level change to secure the takedown. Bontorin is a more active fighter than Borg, willing to exchange hands, but doesn’t have great head movement, which leads to him getting hit frequently. However, like Borg, he prefers to have the fight on the floor, with 11 of his 16 pro wins ending in submission, while his lone defeat came in the same manner.

Prediction: Ray Borg (-155) via decision

Lando Vannata vs Yancy Medeiros

On the heels of back-to-back knockout losses, Yancy “The Kid” Medeiros (-115) looks to get back in the win column for the first time since December 2017. Meanwhile, Lando “Groovy” Vannata (-115) looks to find his groove in the UFC, holding a 2-4-2 record in the Octagon and most recently taking a unanimous-decision loss to Marc Diakiese last September.

Medeiros has been in some wars in his tenure in the UFC, but unfortunately he tends to be on the wrong side of those bouts, having been outstruck in six of his last eight fights. That said, because of his aggressive style, he pushes the pace the entire fight and the power he possesses keeps him in the bout the entire time. Vannata also is an aggressive fighter and elects to get in striking wars, often disrespecting his opponents’ power by standing in front of them with his hands low. Even though he dares his opponents to engage with him, he’s never been knocked out. Don’t expect this fight to hit the floor with these two warriors in the cage – it should be a war.

Prediction: Lando Vannata (-115) via decision
