UFC on Fox: Jacare vs Brunson 2 Betting Odds and Preview

The UFC heads to Charlotte, North Carolina this weekend for a card that is flying under the radar. The main event is an important middleweight battle between Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza and Derek Brunson.

The co-main event also features an intriguing featherweight bout between a couple of 145-pound gatekeepers with Dennis Bermudez and Andre Fili squaring off.

Jacare Souza vs Derek Brunson

There is no doubt that Jacare Souza (-145) is looking to take his opponent to the mat. Jacare has one of the best ground games in MMA history, as his technical acumen and aggression combine to form a nearly impossible attack for opponents to defend. He can easily pass guard and work for submissions – his bread and butter – but he also has great ground and pound.

On the feet, Jacare has developed an aggressive style that is meant to pressure his opponent against the fence. Once the Brazilian can trap his opponent on the cage, he can capitalize on his excellent grappling skills to bring a fight to the mat. Jacare doesn’t throw with a ton of volume but has the speed to rapidly close the distance.

Derek Brunson (+115) is an explosive, aggressive athlete who aims to knock out his opponent. That means that Brunson moves forward in the striking game – though he can work at distance as well – behind his heavy left hand. Though he has one-hitter quitter power, his lunging style leaves him susceptible to a good counter-striker.

Moving forward also means that Brunson can initiate the clinch, where he has a wealth of techniques to punish his opponent. The North Carolina native can get the takedown from the clinch but does so more based on tenacity and aggressiveness than skill. Brunson’s ground game, though, features some violent ground and pound.

This fight has a lot of interesting angles. Jacare will obviously want to take his opponent to the mat but Brunson has not been taken down in any of his past 11 fights. Brunson has the power to capitalize on an aging chin from Jacare but will his aggression ultimately be his downfall?

Dennis Bermudez vs Andre Fili

Dennis Bermudez (-160) has basically been cemented as the gatekeeper to the division. That does not mean “The Menace” is not dangerous, as Bermudez is an athletic, hyper-aggressive fighter who pushes the pace. He loves to push the pocket and land speedy combos but that style also highlights his defensive deficiencies.

Bermudez was a collegiate wrestler who does an excellent job at mixing in takedown attempts with his strikes. Over time, we have seen a bigger emphasis on top control in his game, which is a step in the right direction because he is suffocating and aggressive once he gets the dominant position.

Andre Fili (+130) is a whirling dervish of aggressiveness, as “Touchy” moves forward with almost reckless abandon. He has plenty of faith in his offensive striking, which is not a bad thing considering the speed and power he carries in his hands. This style is exciting to watch but it also means Fili eats far more strikes than he needs to.

Fili has an underrated offensive wrestling game. The Team Alpha Male member is great at hitting opportunistic double leg takedowns thanks to his timing and athleticism. That being said, his takedown defense leaves a lot to be desired.

This is a bout between two aggressive fighters who want to sling leather. Bermudez has the grappling advantage while Fili has a power advantage. All in all, I expect someone to be clipped so don’t blink.
