WEC 53 Odds Preview

Benson Henderson (12-1-0) will not only be defending his WEC Lightweight title in the main event of WEC 53, he will also be fighting for a shot at the UFC Lightweight strap as well. MMA odds have him as a 5Dimes -175 favorite against third-degree taekwondo black belt Anthony Pettis (11-1-0), and despite Pettis’ vicious striking skills, he will come into the fight as a +155 underdog.

Henderson is on an 11-fight win streak and has been the class of the division for more than a year and half. He also has a black belt in taekwondo and is technically sound on the ground. What the champ brings to every fight that is hard for opponents to match is his athleticism. Look for Henderson to wear down Pettis for a unanimous decision or a late-round submission victory.

The co-main event will crown the first ever UFC Bantamweight champion. Current WEC Bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz (16-1-0) puts his title on the line as the -210 favorite at 5Dimes against wrestler Scott Jorgensen (11-3-0).

Cruz has only lost to Urijah Faber in his career, and since dropping down to Bantamweight he has been on a six-fight win streak. He had a tough time in his last fight with wrestler Joseph Benavidez, and he could have a tough time against Jorgensen for the same reason.

If Jorgensen can utilize his wrestling skills and control where the fight is fought he has a chance to become the first UFC Bantamweight champion. It’s not so much the 5Dimes number of +175 on Jorgensen that makes the underdog bet here so appealing as much as it’s the -210 MMA odds on Cruz that makes betting on Jorgensen the better option.

WEC 53 will be the last fight card before the organization is rolled into the UFC. As great as the WEC has been over the years, one has to have faith that the UFC will promote the lower weight class fighters better than anyone else has so far in the sport.
