When Will Jones vs Lesnar Actually Happen?

Jon Jones didn’t rest after reclaiming the UFC light heavyweight championship. “Bones” had not left the Octagon before calling out former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar.

Never one to back down, Lesnar quickly responded through the Associated Press by saying, “Be careful what you wish for, young man.”

There is no doubt that WME-IMG, the company that owns the UFC, is focused on superfights. After purchasing the mixed martial arts company in July 2016 for $4.2 billion, WME is assuredly trying to quickly recoup its investment and start seeing some profits. And there is absolutely no doubt that Jones vs Lesnar would draw massive PPV buys.

However, Lesnar retired earlier in 2016 while serving his one-year suspension for testing positive for a banned substance after his UFC 200 bout with Mark Hunt. By retiring, Lesnar has paused that suspension with six months left, which means the current WWE superstar will need to complete the final six months of that suspension before entering the Octagon.

That’s not to say that Lesnar is not interested in the fight. But the fight will not happen until at least next summer according to Dave Meltzer. This is because Lesnar will need to be in the USADA testing pool for at least six months and is still under WWE contract until after WrestleMania 34. The pro wrestling company suffered a massive public relations nightmare when “The Beast Incarnate” failed a USADA drug test while under contract and is looking to avoid that.
