Will McGregor Compete In A Boxing Match During 2017?

The buzz around Conor McGregor potentially plying his wares inside a boxing ring continues to grow larger by the day. The Irishman continues to fan those flames by getting his boxing license in the state of California and making comments like “I can go and conquer the boxing scene…”

Of course, there is also all the smack talk between McGregor and Floyd Mayweather.  You seemingly can’t go more than 48 hours without one of the two fighters firing shots at the other. There is no doubt in the world that McGregor vs Mayweather would make an obnoxious amount of money, but there are still quite a few things standing in the way of that happening.

The obvious is the UFC. Would the UFC allow its golden goose to compete in another sport without seeing at least some cut of the profits? How much of those profits would Mayweather, who has received obnoxiously high pays between promotion and fighting, be willing to give up?

There is also the matter of where the fight would take place. Mayweather has not fought outside Nevada since 2005 and has a working relationship with the MGM Grand. McGregor is currently licensed in California, but not Nevada. The odds of Mayweather fighting outside of Las Vegas is ridiculously small and you need to wonder if the Nevada State Athletic Commission would give McGregor a license given their checkered past with each other other.

Then you need to wonder how much of this is just posturing? McGregor taking on the best boxer of this generation in his domain would be likely disastrous. Mayweather taking a fight that he could actually lose, as he goes for the 50-0 record, seems near-sighted for the shrewd businessman.
