Will McGregor Fight In The UFC in 2017?

Conor McGregor is about to be a very rich man. The Irishman is going to collect the paycheck of a lifetime thanks to his superfight with Floyd Mayweather on August 26. But many hard-core MMA fans have been left asking: When is Conor coming back?

If oddsmakers are to be believed, McGregor’s next UFC fight isn’t happening until at least 2018. Online sportsbook Bovada placed a line on whether McGregor will fight in the UFC in 2017 with the “Yes” being listed at +175 and the “No” at -225.

Don’t tell Dana White this, as he told Fox Sports: “In the conversation that I had with (McGregor), he’s fired up for this fight and he’s excited to fight again and defend his (UFC) title by the end of the year. Nothing is a guarantee. You can’t be guaranteed anybody’s ever going to fight again.”

However, this came before the UFC booked an interim lightweight title fight between Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee. The winner of that belt is the de facto No. 1 contender to McGregor’s belt but that event takes place on October 7. That doesn’t leave much time to book the fight, go through a full training camp and step inside the Octagon before December 31. Not to say it is impossible, it just means all the parties involved would need to really strive to achieve the same goal.

It will also be interesting to see how McGregor moves forward following MayMac with the creation of McGregor Sports and Entertainment. This, theoretically, gives McGregor the ability to promote himself leading into fights much like Mayweather has. This model has been done in boxing but it has yet to cross over to MMA. Of course, the UFC has never really co-promoted a fight before and this could be a sticking point for some of the higher-ups.

From all the rhetoric, it seems that McGregor wants to be back in the Octagon as soon as possible. But there are more than a few obstacles that may extend the process.
