As the dust settles on Super Bowl 59 the big winners weren't only the Philadelphia Eagles who won their second Lombardi trophy in seven years, or your buddy who hit on his wildly speculative five-leg parlay, it seems like the big winner was the state of New York and their schools.
According to the state's gaming commission today on X (formerly Twitter), a total of $154.9 million was bet on Super Bowl 59 in the state with $130.3 million in the form of game wagers and $24.5 from futures bets.

From that $154.9 million in handle operators generated $62.7 million in gross revenues, which means, thanks to New York's 51% tax rate on gross revenues the state will get a massive $31.9 million payout thanks to Super Bowl 59.
Just for comparison's sake, the $31.9 million in tax revenue that New York will collect off a single event surpasses the total taxes collected across 17 states where sports betting is legal for the entirety of 2024.
Massive Win For Education
Some 95% of tax revenues from gaming are poured into education. This means the Super Bowl alone will contribute just over $30 million to education in New York. From 2022 through the 2024 calendar year nearly $2.5 billion was given to public schools across the Empire State. With only data from January, 2025 has already seen $149 million in revenues for public schools.
Year | Revenues For Education |
---|---|
2022 | $693,124,220 |
2023 | $860,759,342 |
2024 | $920,572,631 |
2025* | $149,022,555 |
Data from the New York Gaming Commission
*Only reporting for January
Of course, New York has advantages such as a large population, a deeply embedded sports culture, and a 51% tax rate on gaming gross revenues. Combined these factors help push those tax revenues to incredible heights. But in 2024, states outside of New York combined to collect $1.7 billion in tax revenues.
It's a lesson for states where sports gambling hasn't yet been legalized. While states like Texas and California still tackle the idea of legalized sports gambling, New York and many other states are reaping the benefits from regulating an ongoing practice where money is funneled to illegal and offshore books.
