Las Vegas Expert Picks: NFL, NCAAF

A view of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) from behind in the second quarter of an NFL game between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Kansas City Chiefs on October 7, 2018 at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO.

Vegas veteran Benjamin Eckstein, author of America’s Line, brings three decades of experience to make weekly picks in his “Ecks & Bacon” column.

LAS VEGAS — After a couple of perfectos, it was an ugly week for Ecks & Bacon, but not as ugly as the person who paid $1.4 million for an original Banksy work of art. The painting was “Girl with Balloon” and just after the gavel came down, a remote-control mechanism on the back of the frame started to shred the art. You pay a million and change for a Banksy original, only to see it in little strips. Bad, bad, BAD BEAT, right? Not so fast.

Sotheby’s facilitated the auction that led to the destruction of the piece. However, the shredding stunt has drawn more attention to “Girl with Balloon” than its exorbitant sale price and many are speculating that the piece could now be valued significantly higher than $1.4 million given its newly secure place in the history of art. Bad beat NO MORE!

Back to my corner of the world, and start with a no-play on the matchup in Milwaukee tonight. Future Hall of Famer Clayton Kershaw is virtually impossible to bet against, yet the Brewers come roaring in on an 11-0 run ... you see my dilemma, and why I’m just watching.

NCAAF pick

However, do have some action for you on the college football board tomorrow. We’re taking a look at the Pac-12 and gonna buy Colorado +7 points against USC. Yes, Southern Cal has dominated the Buffaloes with a dozen wins in this series. Olde news. However, the Buffs bring a gorgeous 5-0 record to Los Angeles, and we noticed that the Trojans have been burning gaping holes in the bank accounts of those who threw down a wager on the Cardinal & Gold. How big is the burn? This season, SC is 1-4 against the spread, and has covered only four of the last 17. Yeah, UGLIFIED!

What’s not ugly is Buff junior QB Steven Montez. He might not be Sam Darnold, but his numbers are INSANE. He has hit on 115 of 153 attempts, only a 75.2 percent completion rate, with 1,420 yards, close to 300 per game, and has 11 TDs with just 2 INTs. And oh yeah, his completion rate is at the very top of the national list of QBs, tied with some kid named Tua Tagovailoa. Loving me some Buffaloes.

NFL pick

On Sunday night, we’re gonna roll with the Chiefs +3.5 points over the Patriots. New England’s back, baby. Yeah, right. Beating the snot out of the Dolphins 38-7 and posting a 38-24 win against the Colts doesn’t really impress me. Yeah, Tom Terrific has some new toys, specifically WR Josh Gordon, but our old friend Andy Reid has Kansas City on quite a tear. The Chiefs are already 5-0 and QB Patrick Mahomes is making opposing defenses dizzy.

No doubt that the evil master Bill Belichick will devise something special for Mahomes, but you also know that Andy will have a few wrinkles of his own. And not just in his pants. Andy has also been brilliant in the underdog role the last few years, with Kaycee covering eight of the last 10, and at 80 percent, my wallet will be at attention. For those who think New England never loses at home, lemme remind you of Week 1 last season when the Chiefs ripped the Patriots 42-27, WITHOUT Mr. Mahomes. One thing left to say. Yup, this is my BEST BET, BABY!!!

And PLZ hit me on Twitter over the weekend, @vegasvigorish, just in case anything pops.
