Jose Berrios Minnesota Twins Benjamin Eckstein Las Vegas Expert Betting Picks Odds

Vegas veteran Benjamin Eckstein, author of America’s Line, brings three decades of experience to make weekly picks in his “Ecks & Bacon” column.

LAS VEGAS — Most of you are too young to remember the singer Meat Loaf, but the big man said two out of three ain’t bad. That’s exactly what we posted last week in this space, putting the last three columns at 8-2. We’ll take 80%, babbeee!!

MLB Picks

Back on the baseball board, while the Tigers have become the DARLINGS of all the sportsbooks here in Vegas and around the world, don’t think they’re gonna be able to solve Jose Berrios at home in Minnesota. Bet the game last night at around -230 when Boyd was the listed starter for Detroit, but they have changed to VerHagen, and the line jumped to -320. Still like the Twinkies, but will scale down the wager.

And if you’re in the neighborhood, try the Cards with Jack Flaherty over the Rockies. Why? Flaherty has started four games since the start of August, allowing only one TEENY-TINY earned run over 26 innings. Got out the calculator, punched in some numbers, and it spit out a 0.35 ERA. Yeah, you heard me, ZERO point THREE FIVE. And as my dad always said, any time you see an ERA with a ZERO as the first number, open the wallet!!!

NCAAF Picks

Now, STAND UP for some real, live, bettable college football action tomorrow. If you’re a stats geek, you’ve probably seen this one. Florida is 27-1 in opening games the last 28 years. TWENTY-SEVEN wins and only one loss. Very impressive, yeah. But when you schedule the Charleston Southerns of the world, a W is basically guaranteed. However, the one loss came against Michigan back in 2017, on, yes, a NEUTRAL FIELD. This game is in Orlando, and while it’s closer to Gainesville than Miami, it’s STILL a neutral field. Thinking that the Gators are gonna squeeze out a win, but with only one returning starter on the offensive line, give the cover to the Hurricanes (+7 points) and first-year head coach Manny Diaz.

Looked at late night in Hawaii, and while we would like to jump on a double-digit home dog, the Rainbow Warriors, the Pac-12 (’Zona Wildcats) just might be too much for a middle-of-the-road Mountain West squad. Taking a hall pass.

Travers Stakes Pick

Anybody still play the ponies??? My guy Martin Mac has some words about the Travers Stakes in Saratoga.

It looks as if we will have a dry track for the Travers on Saturday. Dropping some love and cash on Code of Honor. He comes off a win in the Grade 3 Dwyer at Belmont and has been working really good leading up to this race. So we’re throwing $50 on the nose, $25 to place, and $25 to show.
