Las Vegas Expert Picks: NFL Week 1, NCAAF Week 2

Vegas veteran Benjamin Eckstein, author of America’s Line, brings three decades of experience to make weekly picks in his “Ecks & Bacon” column.

LAS VEGAS — Of course, whenever you start to brag on yourself, the lords of gambling smack you in the face. We were flying high, then took some incoming last week, dropping the recent run to 12-6. Still above water, and still making money at 67 percent, but still not satisfied and looking for a sweep this weekend.

Start in potato country tonight, where we’re gonna throw some cash at Marshall +12 points over Boise State. Certainly not recommending the moneyline, or an outright upset, but taking a dozen to the bank seems like the right move. Boise is coming off an emotional win AT Florida State, and after the cross-country trip, there might be a little letdown. Totally understand that the Broncos win almost all their home games, straight up, but they are only 23-40 ATS as a home favorite the last decade. Gimme the dozen.

On Saturday, we stay up late with Hawaii -6 points over Oregon State.

MLB Pick

Also got a little love on the baseball board tonight, and gonna roll with the A’s over the Tigers. Oakland is still fighting for a wild-card spot, and Homer Bailey has been an enormous help since coming over from Kansas City. He was 7-6 with the Royals, but 5-2 since putting on the A. Spencer Turnbull will be on the hill for Detroit, and 2019 has been kinda UGLIFIED for the young righty. How ugly? Does 3-14 sound ugly enough? He has not won a game since WAY back on May 31, and will not find a W tonight.

And now, on to the BIG BOYS!

NFL Picks

Pushing most of my chips in on the Ravens -6.5 points over the Dolphins. Does John Harbaugh’s amazing preseason record translate to the regular season? You betcha, BAABBEEE!!! As always, Double V did the required homework, and check this out. Come back in Vic’s time machine to 2016. Baltimore was 4-0 in pre, straight up and against the spread, then opened with a 13-7 win over Buffalo, covering a 3-point spread.

In 2017, the Ravens posted another 4-0 perfecto, yes, straight up and against the spread, then CRUSHED the Redskins in the opener, AT Washington, 30-17. In 2018, the Harbaughs were 5-0 straight up, 3-2 against the spread, and ROCKED the Bills in the opener 47-3.

So, Johnny H’s crew posted yet another 4-0, straight up and against the spread, coming into this season, and whaddya think’s gonna happen at Miami? That’s 17-0 straight up and 15-2 against the spread. And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why Baltimore is my BEST BET, BAABBEEE!!!

Also got a play on the Eagles -3 points over the Redskins in the 1st quarter, and will shock you with the Chiefs UNDER 52 points against the Jaguars.
