Las Vegas Expert Picks: Tiger Woods-Phil Mickelson Match, NCAAF, NFL

Phil Mickelson, left, listens to Tiger Woods speak during a news conference where they were announced as captain's picks for the 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup Team, Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2018, in West Conshohocken, Pa.

Vegas veteran Benjamin Eckstein, author of America’s Line, brings three decades of experience to make weekly picks in his “Ecks & Bacon” column.

LAS VEGAS — FORE BABY!!! Ready to walk the walk, and make some cash here in Vegas at Shadow Creek as Tiger and Phil go mano a mano. Gonna look at the prop wagers, which is where we think a profit is waiting. Both guys have had trouble with the putter on occasion, so the three-putt prop is first up. Will Tiger three-putt is at +800 and Phil is at +700. I’m in for a full Benjamin on both. And a sweet cross-sport prop. Which will be higher, holes won by Tiger at -125, or total goals in the Vegas-Calgary NHL game at +105?

The Golden Knights played at Calgary on November 19, and the Flames won 7-2. Probably not gonna see nine goals again here in Vegas, but still think I’ll take more goals than holes Tiger wins. And now for maybe the BEST BET on the card. How many times will Tiger twirl his club. The OVER/UNDER is 3.5 twirls, and we’re goin’ OVER, WAY OVER. Eldrick is gonna hit between 27 and 32 putts, give or take, so that leaves about 40 shots, give or take, with driver and his irons. All it will take is four superb shots, and if Tiger can’t get at least four, I’m turning in my PGA card. Spoiler alert. Don’t have a PGA card.

And, PLZ follow me, @vegasvigorish, as I walk the course and BET on EVERY SINGLE HOLE!!!

We’ll travel to Columbus tomorrow, and take Michigan -4 points over Ohio State. Both teams roll in at 10-1, but it just seems like the Wolverines are the absolute right side. Why? Four reasons jump right off the stat page. Michigan’s defense ranks No. 1 nationally in fewest yards allowed. They finally have a QB, Shea Patterson, who can make plays. And an RB, Karan Higdon, who has gobbled up 1,106 yards on the ground. Finally, just gotta say it’s impossible to back a team that was blitzed for more than 500 yards and gave up 51 points to Maryland.

And of course, a sweet 10-point three-team teaser. Start with Notre Dame, and drop the Fighting Irish from -11 to -1 point over USC. Then take Utah down from -11 to -1 point against BYU, and close it out with Nevada, and drop the Wolf Pack from -13 to -3 points against UNLV.

On Sunday, we’re jumping on the Patriots -10 points over the Jets. Laying a dime on the road, Eck/Vic? You outta your mind? Well, we’ll see. As usual, there are reasons. New England does not get embarrassed often, but in their last game before the bye, lost to Tennessee 34-10. Ouch. And the last time the Patriots lost by 12 points or more (Week 2, 26-10 to the Lions), they came back with a 38-7 win the following week against the Dolphins. Actually, the Brady Bunch is 7-0 straight up and against the spread coming off a game where they lost by more than a dozen.

And while Bill Belichick is NO Andy Reid coming off the bye week, the Patriots BLASTED the Broncos last season, at Denver, 41-16, following the rest. The Jets will be without QB Sam Darnold, pushing Josh McCown into the starting role again. Last time out, McCown completed 17 of 32 passes for only 132 yards with 2 INTs. Brady vs McCown. C’mon. Only one thing left to say. Yup, this is my BEST BET, BABY!!!
