Mystics Have Still Yet To Cover As An Underdog

The Washington Mystics are one of the better teams in the WNBA Eastern Conference, though that isn’t saying much, in all honesty. The Mystics have found their way to the top end of the conference thanks to beating the teams they should but they have not been pulling off any upsets.

The Mystics have closed as underdogs eight times this season and have yet to cover in any of those games. In those eight games, the Mystics have posted an average scoring margin of -13.3 points. Comparably, Elena Della Donne and company are outscoring opponents by an average of 11.9 ppg when closing as faves.

That’s the mathematical way of saying the Mystics perform exactly up to expectations. When they should win, they typically win big. But when they are in a tough matchup, they seem to get demolished.

With nine games left for the Mystics this season at the time of this writing, there are only two games they will certainly close as dogs. On August 16 they host the Los Angeles Sparks, who beat the Mystics twice already this season. Then, the Mystics close out their season on September 3 against the Minnesota Lynx, the best team in the WNBA.
