Stanley Cup Odds Movement
With every passing week there's significant movement on the 2024-25 NHL Stanley Cup odds board, so let's break down the teams that have seen the biggest rise and fall on the odds board.
Riser: Washington Capitals
Washington might be trading wins and losses over their last ten games going 5-5SU, but they've picked up points in seven straight games, extending their lead in the Metropolitan Division to five points and holding two games in hand on their next closest challenger (New Jersey Devils).
Of course, having your generational talent in Alex Ovechkin peel back the years as he chances Wayne Gretzky's goal-scoring record helps win games, but all the scoring depth around Ovi is doing most of the heavy lifting. Having 2019 third-round pick Aliaksei Protas and 2019 first-rounder Connor McMichael score 35 goals in 43 games has been instrumental for the Caps. As has Dylan Strome scoring 46 points in 43 games and looking like the game-breaker Arizona thought he could be when they drafted him third overall in 2015.
Books have grown more confident in the Caps' chances to make some noise in the playoffs, jumping to +1200 on the BetMGM odds board. If you're wondering what the sharps think of Washington, the Cap's percentage of the handle has gone up from 4.2% at the start of December to 6.9% now, a 2.69% boost and the third-highest boost in handles after the Avalanche (3.57%) and Golden Knights (2.87%). Even the sharps are growing more confident in the Caps.
Faller: Minnesota Wild
The injuries are starting to pile up and affecting results on the ice. The Wild's injury list includes former Hart Trophy front-runner Kirill Kaprizov and half of their defensive core in Jared Spurgeon, Brock Faber, and Jonas Brodin. As such they've gotten spanked by Colorado and Vegas recently by a score of 6-1 and 4-1 respectively. A 3-1 win over the Sharks between those losses spared the Wild a lot of embarrassment.
But being in a tough Central Division is going to keep the losses coming until they can get bodies back, with 58 points on the board the Wild are safe from dropping out of the playoffs imminently, but teams like Dallas (8-1-1 in the last 10) and Colorado (7-2-1 in the last 10) are catching up quick and possibly taking away any advantage they might have had going into the playoffs.
2024-25 Stanley Cup Odds Best Value Bet: New York Rangers
With back-to-back wins, perhaps the dysfunction is over and the Rangers are back.
Panarin has shaken off any pre-Christmas funk that saw him score only three points in six games, he now has eight points in eight games and is riding a four-game point streak. Goalie Igor Shesterkin looks much better since taking time off to nurse an injury over the New Year, the Russian goalie stopped 50 of the 53 shots he's faced in his last two games, backstopping the Blueshirts to those two straight wins.
Sure, the Rangers are out of the playoff picture, but they're only four points back of Columbus with a game in hand. If the Rangers get their act together they should easily overcome that gap.
Last 10 Stanley Cup Winners
Year | Cup Champions | Opening Odds |
---|---|---|
2024 | Florida Panthers | +2000 |
2023 | Vegas Golden Knights | +1800 |
2022 | Colorado Avalanche | +600 |
2021 | Tampa Bay Lightning | +900 |
2020 | Tampa Bay Lightning | +675 |
2019 | St. Louis Blues | +3000 |
2018 | Washington Capitals | +1125 |
2017 | Pittsburgh Penguins | +1100 |
2016 | Pittsburgh Penguins | +1300 |
2015 | Chicago Blackhawks | +700 |
Over the past 10 years, the average opening odds for the eventual Stanley Cup champions are +1320. So don't always bet on the chalk.
The Blues are the big exception with +3000 before the ’18-19 season began, netting early bettors $3,000 on a $100 bet, but it gets better! By the All-Star break that year, the Blues were at the bottom of the NHL standings – their odds of winning the Stanley Cup were +10000. That means a $100 bet would have returned a whopping $10,000 in profits. Wild.
NHL Teams With The Most Stanley Cups
Team | Stanley Cups | Last Cup Win |
---|---|---|
Montreal Canadiens | 24 | 1993 |
Toronto Maple Leafs | 13 | 1967 |
Detroit Red Wings | 11 | 2008 |
Boston Bruins | 6 | 2011 |
Chicago Blackhawks | 6 | 2015 |
Edmonton Oilers | 5 | 1990 |
Pittsburgh Penguins | 5 | 2017 |
New York Islanders | 4 | 1983 |
New York Rangers | 4 | 1994 |
New Jersey Devils | 3 | 2003 |
Toronto sure has a lot of Cups, but they haven't won or even been to a Stanley Cup Final since that last championship back in 1967. Breaking their drought of first-round exits in the 2023 playoffs, let’s pray for Leafs fans that their squad can get to the finals soon.
However, with modern parity in the NHL, it will be long before any franchise passes the Montreal Canadiens' 24 Stanley Cup banners, which they racked up over multiple decades in the mid-1900s.
NHL Teams That Have Never Won A Stanley Cup
With Florida's championship in 2024, there are now only 10 teams who haven't won a Cup. But that's still under a third of the league, who have yet to put their hands on the Stanley Cup.
Most of the teams on this list have come close. All but Arizona, Columbus, Minnesota, Seattle and Winnipeg have at least appeared in a Stanley Cup Final.
Technically the Ottawa Senators did win a few Stanley Cups, but that last championship took place before the invention of penicillin, not to mention the Senators didn't exist between 1934 (when they moved to St. Louis) and 1992. So, I'm not going to count those. Sorry Sens fans!
