Why Is A'ja Wilson Favored To Win WNBA MVP?

The basketball world wasn't hesitant to share their opinions on A'ja Wilson, who finished third in voting, being snubbed of last season's MVP Award.

On route to leading her Aces to back-to-back championship, Wilson averaged 22.8 PPG. That was the third-best mark in the league and with her playing at least four minutes less than Breanna Stewart (23 PPG) and Jewell Loyd (24.7 PPG) who sat above her.

Wilson has already soared to the top of the league standings, averaging 28.3 PPG (ranked first), 11.8 rebounds (ranked first) and 3.0 blocks (ranked first).

She has easily become the face of a dynasty that lives within the walls of Michelob Ultra Arena in Las Vegas. If the award lands in her hands, she'll become the fourth player in history to earn three MVP titles.

Depending on opinion, is the MVP easier to snag when you're surrounded by an even level of skill? You look at last year's finalists were spread throughout the WNBA's top three teams.

But, the true meaning of value means showcasing your talent on a team that lacks. Jewell Loyd led the nation in points per game last season despite her Seattle Storm winning just 11 games. Now, her team have become competitors, sitting fourth in the league and second in the Western Conference.

Last season, in 29 matchups, she led in points and sank 30-plus points on 12 of those occasions. That leadership continues, posting a team high for points in six of the 11 matchups accounted for. Without her, the Storm would've been pure chaos. Isn't that the definition of value? Loyd continues to be the eye of the Storm, posting a team-high 20.3 PPG.

How To Read WNBA MVP Odds

At an online sportsbook that would list WNBA MVP odds, they would look similar to this:

  • A’ja Wilson -200
  • Breanna Stewart +200
  • Kelsey Plum +1400

The minus sign (-) indicates who the odds consider the favorite. In this case, it’s the Las Vegas Aces’ A’ja Wilson at -200. Every other player who’s listed is considered an underdog.

If you believe Wilson will win the WNBA MVP and you bet $100 and it happens, you would win $150 – your $100 is returned and you would gain $50 in profit.
