Using a Sportsbook

Before you start betting, you need to find a reputable sportsbook. Any of the ones we recommend above are safe and easy to use. To give you a leg up, or more aptly, a layup, we’ve vetted each sportsbook so you don’t have to.

All you need to do is find one you like from the list above, open an account and make a deposit. Once that’s done, you can move on to the fun stuff.

Betting on the NBA

Below we’ll discuss the different options for NBA betting: moneylines, point spreads and totals. There are also other types offered such as parlays, teasers, live betting, prop bets and futures.

Having basic knowledge of basketball and sports wagering is a great start if you’re a beginner to NBA betting. Though you don’t necessarily have to use each of the wager types listed below, it is useful to understand all of the different options and methods.

When it comes to NBA betting, there are many options to consider:

Moneyline

Moneyline bets are simple because bettors must select which team they believe will win the game. Underdogs provide the most value but are less likely to win the game, according to the oddsmaker. Favorite are not as lucrative as underdogs but have a better chance to win in the eyes of the sportsbook.

For example, if the odds of a moneyline wager feature the Miami Heat at +150 and the Boston Celtics at -120, the Celtics are favored to win and bettors will need to wager $120 to win $100. The Heat are considered the underdog in this case and a $100 wager will result in $150 in winnings.

Point Spread

Much like the NFL, a large percentage of those who participate in NBA betting will use point spreads. Unlike the spread at your wife’s cousin’s baby shower that had smoked salmon, bagels, capers and only one kind of cream cheese, a point spread in NBA betting has the potential to be awesome.

For instance, if a game has a spread of +3.5 for the LA Lakers and -3.5 for the San Antonio Spurs, the Spurs are favored by 3.5 points and the Lakers are 3.5-point underdogs.

Essentially, the Lakers are spotted 3.5 points before the game even starts since they’re considered the weaker team in the game. For those betting on the Spurs, they will have to win by four or more points. For Lakers bettors to win, LA has to either win the game outright or lose by three points or less.

Totals (OVER/UNDER)

Betting totals is another extremely popular option in NBA betting. The oddsmaker will select a total number based on how they think the game will pan out. Totals vary depending on the matchup, and due to the rise in scoring in the NBA over recent seasons, OVER/UNDER numbers seem to be getting consistently higher every year.

To bet on NBA totals, you have to choose if you think the total number of points in the game will be OVER or UNDER the oddsmaker’s selected number.

Let’s say the Pacers and Bulls are facing off. The total set by the oddsmakers is 196. If you bet the UNDER, you think the total score will be less than 196 points. If you bet the OVER, you think that together Chicago and Indiana are going to score more than 196 points. If it lands on 196 exactly, that’s a push and your bet is refunded.

Parlays

Though risky, parlay bets have seen an increase in popularity in recent years. To place a parlay wager, bettors must select a minimum of two totals, moneyline or point spread bets and combine them into one singular bet. What makes a parlay bet risky is that all selections must win in order for the bettor to receive a payout. However, bettors who hit on parlays are rewarded with a significantly higher payout than single wagers.

Teasers

Teasers in regard to NBA betting are fairly similar to parlay bets in that you must have all wagers correct in order to receive a payout. Teasers allow the bettor to adjust the point spread or totals line to minimize their risk. NBA teasers have become a favorite among hoops bettors due to the ability to alter the spread and total depending on how the bettor thinks the game will play out. It’s important to remember that there’s a lot less risk involved in a teaser and your profit won’t be as high as it would be with a parlay bet.

Live Betting

Most sportsbooks offer live betting or in-play betting. Bettors can find an edge while the game is happening. Unlike a traditional wager before the game starts, you can place a bet while watching the game unfold. Live NBA betting lets you place bets as the game is going on, which is great if the favorite has a slow start or if the underdog is giving their all and leading at the end of the first.

Props

NBA prop bets allow bettors to place wagers on outcomes that are not directly associated with the outcome of the game. Prop bets are popular due to their creative nature, and can be quite profitable if you hit on a good one. Some great examples of NBA prop bets would be a team’s total number of rebounds or an individual player’s OVER/UNDER of projected points.

Futures

Futures are bets on an outcome that will happen at a later date. A common futures bet for the NBA would be predicting which team is going to win the championship. You can make a futures bet before, during or after the regular season. Generally, the further away the specific event is, the higher the potential payouts are.

For instance, a bet on the Celtics at the beginning of the regular season will feature significantly higher odds than, say, a wager on Boston in the middle rounds of the playoffs.
