Randy Orton A Massive Favorite To Win Royal Rumble

With less than 12 hours until the road to Wrestlemania begins in earnest, Randy Orton has found himself as an enormous favorite to win the 2017 Royal Rumble. Orton has been floating near the top of the odds since open, but within five days of the rumble has seen his odds drop from +350 to -1000.

With odds moving so drastically, one would assume that Orton would at least be involved in the ending (you never really know when Vince McMahon may change his mind). This may have also created some intriguing value on Bray Wyatt at +2500. If WWE creative wants to try and extend out the Wyatt Family storyline a bit more, it may make more sense to have Bray win the rumble and then have Orton win the Elimination Chamber for the belt.

With Orton becoming such a massive favorite, odds have been plummeting for the rest of the field as The Undertaker has the second-best odds and +800. Some other notable odds are Goldberg at +900, Finn Balor at +1000 and Samoa Joe at +1600.

Just two days away from the 2017 Royal Rumble, odds have seen a massive swing with Randy Orton now being pegged as the odds-on favorite to win the match. Orton has floated around the top of the odds ever since they were released.

It would certainly be an intriguing development in the Wyatt Family storyline to see Orton win the title shot at WrestleMania. With much of the attention around Smackdown’s top title being centered on AJ Styles and John Cena, Orton and the Wyatts’ inclusion could be a breath of fresh air.

Kenny Omega’s Announcement

The biggest speculation around this year’s Royal Rumble has been the potential appearance of Kenny Omega. The Winnipeg native is coming off one of the best matches ever against Kazuchika Okada at Wrestle Kingdom 11. On both Wrestler Observer Radio and The Elite’s YouTube channel, Omega announced that he intends to re-sign with NJPW.

Though this is upsetting for many fans, this means that we will get at least another year of The Elite being the best thing in the wrestling world. During the interview on Wrestling Observer Radio, Omega also said that the WWE has plenty of talent and thinks he can make a bigger impact in NJPW (this is especially true with NJPW looking to make in-roads in North America).

Omega was as high as +3300 to win the 2017 rumble match, but odds had slipped down to +5000 by the time the announcement was made.

The unstoppable force that is Bill Goldberg has vaulted to the top of the 2017 Royal Rumble odds just days before the event. The WWE has built Goldberg as an indestructible force since he squashed Brock Lesnar in less than two minutes at Survivor Series.

To be perfectly honest, I have no sweet clue how WWE Creative could book Goldberg to win the Rumble. It’s clear he is headed for a rematch against Lesnar at Wrestlemania and that match simply does not need/should not involve a belt. Two aging part-timers battling for a belt would not speak very highly of the current full-time roster and Lesnar vs Goldberg is money without involving the gold.

Randy Orton finds himself close behind Goldberg, with the Smackdown superstar being involved in one of the top storylines on the brand. It is clear that Orton and Bray Wyatt are in line to feud eventually but if the company wants to extend that storyline out longer, which I think is the best choice, then a Rumble win could make sense. However, I personally don’t think the WWE will keep this storyline going that long. We likely aren’t going to be seeing any Mega Powers-length arcs in the modern WWE.

The real dark horse is Finn Balor. The WWE clearly has massive plans for the wrestler after putting the title on him in his first PPV match with the main roster. Though injury forced him to give over the title, Balor should be immediately chasing the gold once he returns. There are so many reports regarding Balor’s health ahead of the event that you can’t be sure if he’ll be at the Alamodome, but if he does appear, he could be the favorite.

There may be no more improved wrestler in the past year than Braun Strowman. The former member of the Wyatt Family started his WWE career as a slow-moving, no-selling powerhouse with plenty of crowd apathy. However, over the past several months, Strowman has grown exponentially and the WWE has shown that they see him as a future champion.

With Strowman inserting himself into the main-event picture more and more each week, the big man has become the favorite to win the Royal Rumble. In my opinion, the only potential opponent that would be logical for Strowman would be Roman Reigns, who challenges for the WWE Universal title at the Rumble PPV. Strowman is a legit heel and the WWE may think that pitting Reigns against him may get the heavily pushed star some cheers (which I doubt).

The Undertaker originally opened as the favorite, but has seen his odds drop after dirtsheets have gotten word that his potential Wrestlemania match with John Cena is off the board. Taker winning in his home state and going out on top at Wrestlemania would be a storybook ending, but with his recent appearance on Raw, there is no doubt that he has plenty of options aside from Cena.

Samoa Joe has been the biggest riser, as the Samoan Submission Machine opened at +3300 only to fly all the way up to +550 as of this writing. The WWE reportedly has massive plans for Joe, which includes a marquee matchup at ’Mania. There are rumblings that the WWE wants to match Wrestle Kingdom 11’s stellar six-star match between Kenny Omega and Kazuchika Okada. One matchup that could, potentially, reach the same stratosphere would be Samoa Joe vs AJ Styles.

The above-mentioned Kenny Omega finds himself listed and the wrestling world is still buzzing after that spectacular match at WK11. Omega has disappeared since that match and the wrestling world continues to talk about how amazing it would be to see him debut in the Rumble, like Styles did last year.

The Road To Wrestlemania begins on January 29 when the WWE invades San Antonio for the Royal Rumble. Last year’s Rumble boasted a few highlights (namely the debut of AJ Styles) but was poorly booked and featured one of the most obvious endings in recent memory.

It could be different this year, as the title scene for both the WWE Universal Championship and WWE Championship (or World Championship or whatever Vince McMahon wants it called tomorrow) are less clear-cut. The brand split has also added some intrigue, as this could be a good chance for the WWE to shift superstars from one brand to another.

Less than a month until the PPV, the Undertaker is an 11/8 favorite to win his second Rumble match of his historic career. This would certainly make plenty of sense, as the strong rumor is Undertaker vs John Cena for the WWE Championship at Wrestlemania, in what would likely be Taker’s last match. This would also give Taker a fitting moment in front of his home state crowd who will be red-hot for the phenom.

The only reason I pause for this potential booking is the fact that Cena vs Undertaker doesn’t need a belt to make money. A WWE Championship bout is a moneymaker and a main event type of match the WWE could hype, while Undertaker vs Cena doesn’t need the gold to feel monumental.

The two superstars that I see offering tremendous value are Chris Jericho (7/1) and Samoa Joe (16/1).

Jericho’s time in the WWE keeps getting extended after he was supposed to take a leave months ago, but Y2J has been on a tear. There is no doubt that Jericho and Kevin Owens will eventually clash for the WWE Universal title, as their bromance has become one of the top storylines in the company. This took a bit of a hit after Jericho won the US title, as it may make more sense to see Owens lose the Universal title and not support Jericho moving forward.

Now we look at Samoa Joe. There is no doubt that Joe is ready for the call-up from NXT and he has not appeared on any programming since losing the NXT belt to Shinsuke Nakamura during an international tour. Joe is still wrestling dark matches on NXT to stay fresh, but seeing the Samoan Submission Machine making his roster debut in the Rumble and winning it would be huge for him. There is also some dirtsheets reporting that Joe is set for a massive push once he makes his main roster debut. Then maybe, just maybe, all the smarks could get Styles vs Joe at ’Mania.

One name you will hear a ton about in the coming weeks is Kenny Omega (33/1). Omega may be the best wrestler on the planet — it’s likely either him or Styles — and is coming off one of the best matches ever against Kazuchika Okada at Wrestle Kingdom 11. Not long after that match, Omega said on his Twitter that he is stepping away to assess his next step. Omega is the hottest thing in wrestling right now and bringing him in for a potential storyline with Styles, both leaders of Bullet Club, would make hardcore wrestling fans’ heads explode. I wouldn't hold your breath on this one, as Omega is technically signed until January 30 and NJPW allowing him to partake in the Rumble seems highly unlikely.
