March Madness Seeds: 8 vs 9

You would think the No. 8 vs No. 9 March Madness matchup would be the most even betting situation in the bracket. While historically it has been, the past five years have seen the No. 8 seeds win 13 of 20 matchups with No. 9 seeds both straight-up and against the spread.

Last year, three of the four No. 8 seeds won and covered the number, including Kentucky, Memphis and Gonzaga. The one No. 9 seed that did win in 2014 was actually favored, as Pittsburgh (-6.5) routed Colorado 77-48 to advance. Of those four that moved on, Kentucky was the lone team to get past the second round.

Going back a few years, No. 8 Butler made it all the way to the national championship game, one of four times that has ever happened. In 2014, Kentucky got that far as well and closed as a 2.5-point favorite against No. 7 seed Connecticut in a 60-54 loss. In 1980, UCLA was a No. 8 seed and lost to No. 2 Louisville. And the 1985 Villanova team upset No. 1 Georgetown to win it all, becoming the lowest seed to ever win the NCAA title, which is still the case today.

In the history of the NCAA Tournament, seven No. 8 seeds have advanced to the Final Four overall, including a record two in 2000 (North Carolina and Wisconsin), neither of which made it to the national title game. Only two No. 9 seeds have ever reached the Final Four, Pennsylvania in 1979 and Wichita State in 2013, but similarly neither went on to play for the championship.

And here's another college basketball handicapping nugget as you study point spreads after the bracket is set – how many times recently have No. 8 seeds been underdogs? In the last five years alone, there have been 10 No. 8 seeds that have been dogs in 20 games during that stretch, and they have gone 8-2 SU and ATS. Since 2000, No. 8 seeds have also gone 16-7-1 ATS as dogs, so keep that in mind when the brackets are released and after oddsmakers set the opening lines for these matchups this year.
