Belk Bowl Matchup

Arkansas started 3-0 this season, with that crazy overtime win at TCU, then alternated defeats and victories through the rest of its slate. The Razorbacks couldn't cover as two-touchdown home dogs against Alabama, lost at Auburn 56-3, beat SEC East champion Florida 31-10 but the following week lost to LSU 38-10.

The Hogs ended their regular season by blowing a 24-7 halftime lead and losing at Missouri 28-24. Arkansas outgained the Tigers by over 100 yards, but quarterback Austin Allen threw two interceptions from inside the Missouri five-yard line and a last-gasp drive ended with a penalty and a sack.

Virginia Tech pushed its bowl streak to 24 by going 6-2 in ACC play and winning the Coastal Division. The Hokies then gave College Football Playoff-bound Clemson a good battle in the ACC championship game, losing 42-35 but covering as 10-point dogs. So Virginia Tech finished with a 3-0 ATS run.

In their first season under new coach Justin Fuente, the Hokies proved a bit erratic. They lost rather badly to a mediocre Tennessee team, won at North Carolina, lost as three-touchdown favorites at Syracuse, beat the likes of Miami, Pitt and Notre Dame but also lost as two-touchdown favorites to Georgia Tech.

Arkansas, playing what Sagarin's ratings at USAToday.com call the 24th-toughest schedule in the country this season, ranks 50th in total offense at 438 yards per game but only 66th in rushing at 175 YPG. Meanwhile, the Hogs defense ranks 75th overall, allowing 429 YPG, and 94th against the run, giving up 209 YPG.

Virginia Tech, playing Sagarin's 53rd-toughest slate, ranks 42nd in offense at 448 YPG. But the Hokies own an advantage on defense, considering that unit ranks 19th overall, allowing only 343 YPG, and 42nd against the run, holding foes to 149 YPG on the ground.
