Military Bowl Matchup

Temple got off to a 1-2 start to this season, which included a tough 34-27 loss to eventual Big Ten champion Penn State. A few weeks later the Owls lost at Memphis, and stood at 3-3. But they haven't lost since, parlaying a six-game winning streak into a division title, then beating Navy in the AAC championship game 34-10.

Temple outgained Navy by 80 yards and even won the ground battle against that vaunted Midshipmen running game by a 189-168 margin. So the Owls have now outgained each of their last 10 opponents and outrushed their last seven foes. They've also covered 12 spreads in a row.

Temple's only problem is their success just cost them their head coach, as Baylor poached Matt Rhule away. The Owls will be led in the bowl by assistant head coach Ed Foley, who's been with the program since 2008.

Wake Forest played two different halves this season and managed to earn its first bowl bid since 2011. The Demon Deacons started 4-0, with a win at a decent Indiana team, and reached 5-1, but lost five of their last six games, including their last three in a row to Louisville, Clemson and Boston College to finish at .500.

Back in October, Wake Forest gave Florida State a good game and covered easily as a 23-point dog. A few weeks later the Deacons, at +34, actually led Lamar Jackson and his Cardinals into the fourth quarter, before the roof caved in. In fact, Wake finished the season on a 5-2 ATS run.

Temple, playing what Sagarin at USAToday.com calls the 85th-toughest schedule in the country this season, outgained opponents by 141 yards per game, thanks in large part to the nation's third-ranked defense. Wake Forest, on the other hand, playing the No. 69 schedule, got outgained by an average of 63 YPG, thanks mainly to an offense that ranked No. 125.
