Big East Tournament Betting Preview

The Big East offers an intriguing mix of teams and is headlined by Villanova and Xavier. With those two teams being ranked inside the top 10 nationally, they are easily the two favorites to win the Big East championship. These two teams have played twice during the regular season as well, with the Musketeers and Wildcats splitting the series.

Maybe the hottest team in the nation at the moment is Seton Hall. The Pirates have been steamrolling their opponents thanks to their offense finally catching up to their stellar defense.

And the coldest team in the nation right now may be the Providence Friars. The team was once looked at as one of the best in the country, but posted a 2-5 SU record through the month of February.

The Big East also features Butler, a team that has struggled within the conference, but has been a strong team all-and-all. The Bulldogs are a relatively young team though, so it is still yet to know how they fare under the big lights.

Will another middle seed get hot and win this year, or will the chalk prevail?

No. 1 Georgetown (+375 to win the Big East Tournament at Sportsbook), No. 2 Louisville (+165), and No. 3 Marquette (+1200) each finished the regular season tied for the best record in the conference at 14-4. These three teams will see their first action on Thursday in the quarterfinals, along with No. 4 Pittsburgh (+575).

The Big East produced last year’s college basketball champion and Syracuse would like to make it two in a row in this year’s March Madness.

But first they need to perform in the conference tournament, and the Big East odds favor the Orange heavily. They opened as +120 favorites at Sportsbook, with Marquette the second betting choice at +300.

DePaul, which is expected to lose Tuesday in the tournament’s first game against UConn, is the biggest longshot at +7500. UConn is 7-1 SU against the Blue Demons and has beaten them by at least 20 points the past three meetings.

Big East betting tips off at noon on Tuesday with No. 16 DePaul facing the No. 9 Huskies. The defending national champs are favored here but a +4000 longshot to win the conference title at Madison Square Garden.

No. 13 Pittsburgh faces No. 12 St. John's (the Panthers are 6-1 SU and ATS in seven recent games against the Red Storm) and No. 15 Providence battles No. 10 Seton Hall on Tuesday afternoon. The Friars are just 1-6 ATS in their past seven games vs. the Pirates of Seton Hall.

The final game of Day 1 of the Big East Tournament pits No. 14 Villanova against No. 11 Rutgers. While there are no point spread trends of consequence, the total has been money in the bank when these team meet (past 10 meetings all played OVER the total).
