Rory McIlroy in full swing

2023 Open Championship Odds & Picks: McIlroy, Rahm Sit Atop Bookmakers Odds

The 2023 British Open returns to Royal Liverpool at Hoylake later this summer for the final major championship of the season. Coming back to Royal Liverpool for the first time since Rory McIlroy’s victory in 2014, the British Open is sure to crown another deserving champion.

Cameron Smith will look to successfully defend his Open title, as he got the better of McIlroy in 2022 at the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Champion Golfer of the Year is currently +1800 to raise the Claret Jug again as he has found his form with top-10 finishes at the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open following a slow start to his calendar year.

World No. 2 Jon Rahm and world No. 3 Rory McIlroy find themselves atop the odds board at +900 the week following the U.S. Open. McIlroy continues to factor in major championships, as he has collected 19 top-10 finishes since his last major title at the 2014 PGA Championship.

Rahm checks in as one of the three major champions of the season, with eyes on adding more, while world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler rounds out the top three at +1000 following his podium results at both the PGA Championship and the U.S. Open.

2023 British Open Betting Picks

Justin Thomas (+7000 to win): The two-time PGA Championship winner is currently experiencing a valley in his career. A second-round 81 to miss the cut badly at the U.S. Open may the lowest he has ever been. Despite this, Thomas should be able to figure out his game over the next month especially on a links-style golf course. He is schedule to play in the 2023 Scottish Open the week before the British Open where he has already collected two top-10 finishes in just three attempts.

His short game continues to be the best in the world, and the implementation of Aim Point on the greens should allow an uptick in his putting numbers in the near future. Hoylake will allow players to be somewhat wayward off the tee and if Thomas is able to hone in on his iron play – which is historically his strong point – between now and the end of July, he is more than capable of taking down the third major championship of his career.

How To Read British Open Championship Odds

Looking at odds can be complicated if you’re new to golf betting, so don’t worry if it’s a little overwhelming at first. To learn more about the various ways to wager on golf, check out our How to Bet on Golf page.

If bookmakers have Rory McIlroy as the +1000 favorite at Open Championship odds, that means a $100 bet on him to win the tournament would pay out $1,100 – your bet amount of $100 plus winnings of $1,000.

It’s incredibly tough to win a PGA major, so there is risk involved in pre-tournament winner bets given the significant amount of competition in the field. But McIlroy’s world-class talent and past performance in majors make him a lucrative option despite the shorter odds.

On the other side of the course, Sergio Garcia would be considered a long shot to emerge triumphant at the Open. According to the latest British Open odds, Sergio has +10000 odds to go all the way. A $100 bet on him to win outright would pay out $10,100 – your $100 is returned coupled with your winnings of $10,000.
