One week remains in the MLB regular season.

Obvious postseason locks like the Braves have clinched and thus have nullified odds, but there are some interesting mid-tier squads still fighting for the last wild-card spots. Below, we’ll break down those 2023 MLB playoff odds for fringe clubs with markets still worth betting on.

MLB Playoff Odds: Best Bets Remaining

Chicago Cubs to Make Playoffs (+115)

The oddsmakers were clever with this line. The Cubs are a far superior club to the Marlins, but Miami has the ninth-easiest schedule remaining with three games apiece vs the Mets and Pirates. That's a stomping ground if I've ever seen one, so Chicago can't make any more mistakes. Errors like Seiya Suzuki's botched fly ball vs the Braves Tuesday can't be repeated.

With a narrow lead on the final NL wild-card spot, the Cubs should be chalked. I'm a believer in talented squads getting what they deserve. The North Siders might not deserve a World Series this year, but they've earned a whiff of October baseball.

Seattle Mariners To Miss Playoffs (-115)

Seattle is 4-6 SU in its last 10 and faces an uphill battle for the final week of the season. Unless the Blue Jays hit a rapid tailspin, the M's and Astros are in a two-team race for the final AL wild-card spot. And, kiddos, it's unwise to fade Houston when death is on the line.

There are some playoff studs on the current 'Stros roster (Jose Altuve, Alex Bregman, Kyle Tucker) who, despite some shaky play against basement-caliber opponents, who won't accept a late-season combustion. Justin Verlander has steadied the top of the rotation and compensated for some regression from lefty Framber Valdez. Simply put, the Astros have more pop and more impactful playoff veterans rarin' to go. At pick'em odds, I'd fade the Mariners.
