Cubs Can Match Worst Losing Streak Since 2014 This Afternoon

With another L this afternoon, the Cubs’ losing streak will reach seven – the longest of such streaks since they dropped seven near the end of the 2014 season. Things are getting grim for the defending World Series champs but if you’ve been betting against them, your bankroll is likely gilded for this weekend’s action that will kick off with the Cubs hosting the Cardinals in a matinee matchup at Wrigley Field.

SHARK BITES
  • The Cardinals are 0-6 SU and 1-5 ATS in their last 6 games when Sportsbook a series.
  • The total has gone UNDER in 5 of the 6 games during the Cubs’ losing streak.
  • The Cardinals are 8-3 SU and 9-2 on the runline in their last 11 games as road underdogs.

Starting for the division rivals will be righties John Lackey (4-5, 5.18 ERA) and Lance Lynn (4-3, 2.93 ERA). Lynn, a man in the midst of a revival season after missing 2016 because of Tommy John surgery, went 5.1 innings and allowed two runs in his only start against the Cubs this season, so he’ll be confident coming into today’s showdown after going 0-3 with an ERA of 7.64 in four starts against Chicago the season before he went under the knife.

Lackey, however, has been brutal with a capital B. He’s given up three or more runs in six of his last seven starts and he’s allowed 13 total home runs (five in his last three starts). St. Louis is not the most dangerous team (hitting just 27 home runs in May) but they’re a club that will kill you with singles and Lackey has been giving up plenty of those.

If the Cubs offense doesn’t spark it back up this series and pick up a struggling pitching staff, they could finally be toppled from their perch atop the World Series futures board.
