Losing consecutive games for the first time since before the all-star break, the Cubs are in a miniature rut as they get set to host the NL East-leading Nationals in a potential NLCS preview. Also on a two-game losing streak, the Nats have slowed down significantly of late and come into Wrigley this afternoon as moneyline underdogs.
Taking the mound for their respective teams it’s Tanner Roark (8-7, 4.93 ERA) and the recently rehabilitated Kyle Hendricks (4-3, 3.80 ERA). Since coming off the disabled list, Hendricks hasn’t exactly been sharp, giving up 14 hits in 9.1 innings of work, but he’s been effective, limiting the White Sox and Brewers to just two total earned runs in those starts.
2017 hasn’t been nearly the love fest it was for Roark in 2016 but he’s been a great back-end starter for the Nats. He’s 5-2 on the road this season and in his limited work against Cubs batters, he’s held them to a collective .200 average.
With a serious headwind forecasted to be blowing into Wrigley Field at the time of first pitch, I’m expecting the baseball to stay in the park and with Washington’s offense struggling of late, it couldn’t hurt to target the UNDER.
