Duke looks to put the clamps down on Portland State at PK80 Invitational

The Duke Blue Devils will help celebrate Nike co-founder Phil Knight’s 80th birthday when they take on the Portland State Vikings at the PK80 Invitational. The Blue Devils, who have opened as 23-point favorites, have rolled over their competition thus far and with five McDonalds All-Americans in their starting lineup could make easy work of the overmatched Vikings.

SHARK BITES
  • Duke is 60-0 SU in its last 60 games as a favorite of 24 points or more.
  • The total has gone OVER in 11 of Portland State’s last 12 games as underdog.
  • Marvin Bagley has topped 20 points in three of five games this season.

The Blue Devils have national title aspirations (as usual) and senior guard Grayson Allen has led the charge. The Wooden Award favorite has been explosive to start the year, averaging 18.4 points per game including raining in 37 points on No. 4-ranked Michigan State. But the frontcourt is the story of Duke this season. Marvin Bagley III and Wendell Carter have controlled the boards and will make up arguably the best collection of forwards in NCAA basketball. Duke is 5-0 SU and 4-1 ATS to start the season and should easily bounce Portland State.

The Vikings will basically be playing a home game as Portland State plays just four miles away from Memorial Coliseum. Guard Bryce Canda has averaged just under 18 points per game this season and Duke’s perimeter players will be focusing hard to shut down the senior. While Duke should easily roll over the Vikings, don’t overlook their ability to cover the spread. Portland State is 5-1-1 ATS in its last seven games against teams with winning records.

The total opened at 168.5 and bettors may want to consider the OVER. Duke averages just under 91 points per game and the OVER has hit in the Blue Devils’ last four games with a closing total of 168.5 or less. Expect Portland State to at least be respectable in the scoring department in this matchup as they average 92 points per game and will be pumped up to play in front of a raucous crowd.
