NFL Betting: Week 2 Lines & Totals

With the first week of NFL betting in the books the spreads and totals for Week 2 began popping up at sportsbooks late on Sunday night and Monday. Several of the lines moved quickly; none more than the Thursday night showdown between the New York Jets and host New England Patriots.

The Patriots opened as low as 10-point favorites, but that number didn’t last long. The line surged to as high as Patriots -14 on Monday, but had settled back down at minus -12.5 as of Tuesday afternoon.

Where it’ll end up is anyone’s guess.

The Patriots have won four straight against the Jets, going 3-1 against the number in those meetings. But this is the biggest number the Pats have laid versus the Jets since 2007. (The Pats were whopping 20.5-point favorites in a December 2007 games against the Jets).

The Patriots are 2-5 against the spread in their last seven games as double-digit favorites.

There have also been notable line movements in the Miami-Indianapolis, Dallas-Kansas City, and Minnesota-Chicago games.

The Bears opened as 5-point favorites, but had been bet up 6.5 as of Tuesday. Chicago has won four of the last five meetings straight-up and against the spread, but the Vikings did win the final meeting last season.

The Colts opened as tiny 1.5-point favorites, but were giving 3 at most shops as of Tuesday. Indianapolis struggled to put away the Raiders in Week 1, while the Dolphins pulled away at Cleveland for an Sportsbook win.

The Colts have won seven straight home games, going 6-1 against the number during that stretch.

The other significant line movement came in the Chiefs’ home game against the Cowboys. The game opened as a pick ‘em, but the Chiefs were giving as many as 3 as of Tuesday. Arrowhead Stadium used to be a potent home-field advantage for the Chiefs, but times have changed. Kansas City has lost eight of nine at home.

Quick look at the over/under totals

Remember when most NFL games featured over/under totals in the 30s? Those days are long gone. This week, there are more games with totals in the 50s than there are games with totals in the 30s.

The Broncos-Giants game has the highest total on the board: It’s set at 55. The Chargers-Eagles game features the next highest at 52.5.

The Raiders-Jaguars game is the only one with a total less than 40. It was sitting at 39.5 as of Tuesday.
