Area 51 Raid Betting Odds: How Many will Attend AlienStock?

A simple joke about overtaking Area 51 has bizarrely become so much more than a meme.

Back in May, college student Matty Roberts created a September 20 Facebook event “Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us,” as a quality joke. Some way, somehow, it grew to the point where over two million people marked they were going to attend. Some are actually considering storming the highly classified United States Air Force facility which conspiracy theories have suggested secretly housed extraterrestrials (UFOs).

Besides the raid, there are other planned events, like the Bud Light-sponsored AlienStock music festival in Las Vegas, as well as events in Nevada, California and Arizona per the New York Times.

Whether people show up and storm Area 51 remains to be seen. There has been rampant infighting and disorganization from those trying to plan an actual raid.

What is Area 51?

Area 51 is tied to an incident in the late 1940s in Roswell, New Mexico, where it was reported a flying saucer crashed. The military later reported it was a weather balloon that fell, leading some to believe the United States military was covering up aliens and a UFO crash. Making matters more confusing, the United States denied Area 51 existed, until in 2013 when documents revealed it did. The revelation further flamed the conspiracy theory.

Can people get in trouble for storming Area 51?

It’s sort of unbelievable it has to be said, but yes. Those planning to invade Area 51 can face serious legal repercussions for trying to get inside. The facility is chock full of signage warning about the repercussions (deadly force) for trespassing. Don’t believe me? Check out what an Air Force spokeswoman told The Washington Post

“(Area 51) is an open training range for the U.S. Air Force, and we would discourage anyone from trying to come into the area where we train American armed forces. The U.S. Air Force always stands ready to protect America and its assets.”

Best Bet for the Area 51 Raid

There are some interesting odds pertaining to the upcoming Area 51 arrangement. I’d say your best odds are the -120 UNDER on 8.5 people getting arrested in Rachel, Nevada near Area 51. There’s a good chance I’m putting too much faith in humanity, but it would be insane to see that many people risk their lives and get arrested for a meme.
