The Orioles battled hard to overcome a terrible start from Kevin Gausman but fell short and now cling to a half-game lead over the Jays in the AL East. Toronto could take over first in the division for the time this season since they were 2-0 two games into the season. The Jays will lean on J.A. Happ (13-3, 3.27 ERA) to get them over that hump as they lineup against Yovani Gallardo (3-2, 5.37 ERA).
Gallardo had one of his best starts of the season in his last outing – the problem with that is he gave up two runs over six innings in a game the O’s managed to squeak out a win. He has not earned a win since June 29 and has allowed at least two runs in all but one of his 12 starts this season. Lastly, Gallardo owns a 6.94 ERA in seven road starts – that’s strike three.
The J.A. Happ signing drew a ton of criticism at the time but has proved to be one of, if not the best value contracts in the league. Happ has matured since his first run with the Jays and – excuse the cliché – has learned how to pitch. Happ is 8-1 at the Rogers Centre this season with a 3.21 ERA but be wary. In his last start vs the Orioles, Happ was roughed up for four runs in a game he received tremendous run support and still managed to win.
