Texans Still Going For the Win in Week 17 Despite Already Clinching AFC South

Prior to Week 16, the Tennessee Titans were gearing up for a playoff run and would’ve put some serious pressure on the Texans with a win in Jacksonville. Alas, their hopes at the postseason were broken along with Marcus Mariota’s leg. This Week 17 matchup with the Texans was shaping up to be an excellent one but with it now being meaningless, it’s tough to forecast a result.

SHARK BITES
  • The Titans are 2-8 in their last 10 games against the Texans.
  • The Texans are 6-0 ATS in their last 6 games against the Titans.
  • The Titans are 2-8-1 in their last 11 games as a favorite.

The Texans look like the weakest of all the playoff teams so they won’t be able to take a week off and will most likely be using this division matchup with the Titans as a final tune-up. Bill O’Brien has said Houston will be playing to win so we probably won’t be seeing any of the Texans’ stars hit the bench until victory is secure and we could even see the return of the oft-injured Lamar Miller on Sunday.

Tom Savage is 1-0 as the Texans’ starting quarterback this year and Houston backers will be hoping to see him calling the signals going forward. Since taking over Brock Osweiler’s duties under center, Savage hasn’t been incredible but has also not been nearly as volatile as his predecessor. The third-year man out of Pittsburgh has led his Texans to two wins by a combination of just three points and has yet to throw a touchdown pass. The positive, though, is that he hasn’t turned the ball over thus far and is actually looking for DeAndre Hopkins down the field, something Osweiler refused to do.

Savage’s counterpart is looking like it’s going to be Matt Cassel and that should inspire very little confidence in bettors. The man who relieved Tom Brady in the wake of his gruesome knee injury back in 2008 did the same for Mariota last week and was less than impressive. He completed 13 of his 24 pass attempts while throwing one touchdown and an interception.

If you feel like you need to bet this game, and I don’t know why you would, you may want to stick to totals. These are going to be two extremely inefficient offenses facing off and I can’t see them putting up too many points.
