NFL Week 8: Computer Predictions

There are some giant home underdogs this week, and recent history indicates backing them would be wise. Since 2000, double-digit home underdogs are 46-26 against the spread. Eighteen of the last 20 double-digit home underdogs have covered the spread.

But the OddsShark.com Computer isn’t buying it, and is laying a ton of points in the three primetime games this week.

The Computer is laying double-digits with the mighty Seattle Seahawks on Monday night. The Seahawks are 11.5-point road favorites over the St. Louis Rams, who are so desperate after losing starting quarterback Sam Bradford for the season that they reportedly reached out to Brett Favre to gauge his interest in coming out of retirement.

Favre won’t be suiting up for the Rams this weekend, leaving journeyman backup Kellen Clemons to take on a Seattle defense that most believe boasts the best secondary in the league.

The Computer also is taking the Green Bay Packers, who are 10-point favorites at the Minnesota Vikings in the Sunday night game. The Packers have been decimated by injuries, but they still have their starting quarterback in Aaron Rodgers. That’s more than the Vikings can say. One week after inserting Tampa Bay cast-off quarterback Josh Freeman into the starting role, it looks like Christian Ponder will get the start against the Packers. Freeman reportedly has a concussion.

The Computer starts the week off by taking the Carolina Panthers in an easy, low-scoring rout of host Tampa Bay, which would keep the Bucs winless.

The Denver Broncos’ impressive run of seven consecutive OVERs will continue with a 42-24 win over the visiting Washington Redskins, according to the Computer. There also will be a high-scoring game in Detroit, where the favored Lions will be upset by the Dallas Cowboys in a shootout. The Computer sees Dallas prevailing, 29-25, to improve to 7-1 against the spread.
