Dolphins on a roll when hosting West Coast teams

It’s hard to believe Miami is on a roll in any specific situation, but there’s no typo in that headline. The Dolphins are on a streak that’s seen them post 11 consecutive outright wins at home vs West Coast-based teams. They’ll get an opportunity to add another W to that streak as an underdog on Sunday Night Football vs the visiting Oakland Raiders.

Shark Bites
  • The Dolphins are 1-5 ATS in their last six games at night.
  • The total has gone UNDER in six of the Raiders’ last eight games on the road.
  • The Raiders are 12-3 ATS in their last 15 games on the road after failing to cover in their two most recent road games.

Somehow the Dolphins come into this game with a winning record of 4-3 SU, but for a multitude of reasons, it’s been a very ugly season in South Beach. They’re at the bottom of the league averaging a pitiful 13.1 points per game and to the curiosity of many, they just offloaded 24-year-old starting running back Jay Ajayi, who was supposed to be a big part of the offense for years to come. Even against a mediocre Oakland rush defense, Miami will struggle to run the ball with the duo of Damien Williams and Kenyan Drake, who only have a combined 57 rushing yards this season. Not good.

The Raiders have been hot and cold this season. They’re 3-5 SU and were excellent in their three wins, but they also have a few no-show performances under their belts vs the Redskins and Bills. They’re now in must-win territory if they want to make it back to the playoffs and if you’re wary of visiting teams playing on the opposite coast, your instincts might be right in this case. The Raiders are a brutal 4-20 SU in their last 24 games on the East Coast, which matches up pretty good with that “Dolphins hosting a West Coast team” trend.

There seems to be an avalanche of trends working in Miami’s favor, including a 4-1 SU and ATS record in their last five games as a home underdog. And it just so has it that the Raiders have traditionally been a bust as a road favorite, going 4-8 SU and ATS in their last 12 as road chalk. Considering how atrocious Miami looked vs the Ravens last week, though, these trends need to be taken with a grain of salt.

The total for the game is hovering at 43.5 points and bettors will be interested to know that the Dolphins’ home OVER/UNDER record combined with the Raiders’ road OVER/UNDER record is 2-5. The Raiders are averaging just 15 points in road games this season and Miami’s defense is allowing a respectable 19 points per game at home, making the UNDER a nice option for totals bettors.
