Edmonton Oilers-400

Odds as of April 24

After having their playoff run end early two straight years by Edmonton, the Kings will look for payback. Oddsmakers are giving them a chance, too. At +160, LA enters with the shortest underdog odds of the last three years.

In the last 10 series played, the Kings have only been crowned favorites once, which was in the conference semi-finals against Anaheim in 2014.

Odds as of April 24

The fewest games it has taken Edmonton to knock off LA was six. That was last season when the Oilers entered the series as generous -280 favorites.

Of the four times the Kings have snagged a postseason spot in the last decade, they have failed to advance past the first round in each. Yikes.

The Oilers won three of four meetings against the Kings this season, including going undefeated while hosting them at Rogers Place.

Despite Edmonton's prolific offense, each game fell short of hitting the OVER. Looking further back, the UNDER is 8-2 in the last 10 regular season outings between these two.

Notable Player Performances

Connor McDavid: Bet you weren't expecting to see this name! Ignoring my blatant sarcasm, there's no undermining McDavid's success this season, becoming the fourth in NHL history to record at least 100 assists.

The milestone is massive and shows the captain's capability to make the players surrounding him better. Relying on McDavid's play-making skills while also having the safety net of his goalscoring abilities to fall back on makes the Oilers a lethal threat.

Quinton Byfield: Something about lining up against Edmonton sends an adrenaline run through this kid's veins. Byfield is having a strong season to say the least, obliterating his previous best to record a career-high 55 points.

The 21-year-old was printed on the scoresheet, earning at least a point in all four meetings with the Oilers this season. His best performances of the year were against McDavid's group and guaranteed that will only boost his confidence heading into this playoff series.

Edmonton has met LA in the playoffs nine times, with the Oilers coming out on top in seven of those series. The Kings haven't defeated the Oilers in the playoffs since 1989.

Despite the series' success and being heavily favored entering the first round, Edmonton has yet to win Game 1 against the Kings in the last two series meetings.

Edmonton vs LA playoff series expert pick: Oilers 4-3 (+400)

I wouldn't count the Kings out too quickly, especially if your sole reasoning is using recent playoff history to support your argument.

There's no denying the Kings have looked significantly better under Jim Hiller, who was promoted to interim head coach in February. Not only did LA wrap up with a promising 21-12-1 record under Hiller, but its advanced stats also inflated.

The Kings (54.56%) and Oilers (57.11%) sit third and fourth in expected goal rankings. Plus, over two and a half months, the Kings' powerplay has jumped to 23.7% proving their offensive has hit a decent groove.

The defense has never had an issue, allowing 2.56 (3rd) and killing 84.6% (2nd) of penalties.

However, Edmonton has proved it can work around that robust defense three times this season. Scoring 292 goals this season, the fourth-most in the league, makes a case for the Oilers offense.

I still think this matchup will be closer than the odds suggest. I wouldn't be surprised if I flip once the series plays out.
