Boston leaves the comfort of home on Thursday to begin a West Coast road trip starting in Anaheim. The Red Sox lost some ground in the AL East when they dropped three games to the Tigers and will look to regain some momentum against the struggling Angels. Sox ace David Price (9-7, 4.51 ERA) will get the rock this evening to face the Angels' former ace, Jared Weaver (8-8, 5.32 ERA).
Both starters in this one are coming off very rough outings. Weaver was touched up by the Astros for six runs, lasting just four innings, while Price got torched by the Twins for five runs.
Price had been pitching much better away from Fenway but that trend has evened out and he now has pretty bad stats wherever he’s hurling. He has, however, fared pretty well against the Angels’ lineup and has only allowed them to hit a combined .201 career batting average off of him.
Weaver has shown glimmers of his former glory and had actually managed to string together two quality start wins before the reality check against the 'Stros. He’s pretty tough to rely on nowadays, though, and he may have some trouble with a potent BoSox offense that has had some success against the California native.
David Ortiz has enjoyed massive career success against Weaver, hitting a blistering .324 through 37 at-bats against the righty – he may be getting some free passes tonight.
