Since the NCAAB Tournament expanded in 1985, No. 7 seeds have dominated their lower-seed counterparts. They boast a commanding 92-59 SU record, making No.7 a reliable favorite on paper. However, recent history gets a little more interesting.
At least one No. 10 seed has both won and covered the spread in each of the last five March Madness tournaments. In fact, in 2019 Florida, Iowa and Minnesota all won outright as 10-seeds. Be sure to identify if a No. 7 seed for a weak conference is facing a battle-tested No. 10. As seen in the data, schools from a power conference are excellent at covering the spread as a supposed underdogs against more highly rated No. 7 seeds.
No. 10 seeds have gone 15-23-2 ATS in the last ten tournaments. Though you'll be unable to blindly bet the underdog in these opening round college basketball matchups, surging No. 10 seeds are worth a look ATS.
