March Madness Seeds: 7 vs 10

The difference between a No. 10 seed and a No. 7 seed is often very small and a spot in the March Madness bracket where you can usually find some good pick and betting value.

Those No. 10 seeds had been money makers recently at the sportsbooks, going 11-5 against the spread and 9-7 straight-up in the four NCAA Tournaments from 2009 through 2012. However, the No. 7 seeds have rebounded over the past two years, winning six of eight games and going 5-2-1 ATS at the payout window.

This bracket position will typically see fading teams from power conferences that struggled down the stretch against surging Mid-Majors, which can result in a dangerous matchup for the higher seed. While that may not have exactly been the case last year when the buzzer finally sounded in three of the four games that saw the No. 7 seed advance, digging a little deeper tells a slightly different story.

Just one of the three No. 7 seeds in 2014 that won in the first round saw its game end in a blowout, with Oregon routing BYU 87-68 as a 5-point favorite. Another of the three winners pushed as a 2-point favorite, as Texas edged Arizona State in an 87-85 victory. Most noteworthy though is Connecticut not only topping Saint Joseph’s 89-81 but also covering the spread as a 5.5-point favorite. UConn needed overtime to knock out St. Joe’s and could have easily lost that game, which would have obviously prevented the team from eventually winning its fourth national championship.

Instead, UConn went on to become the first No. 7 seed to ever make it to the Final Four and thus the only one to win the NCAA title. A No. 10 seed has never made it to the Final Four, with seven teams making it as far as the Elite Eight. Davidson was the last No. 10 seed to make it to the Elite Eight in 2008, suffering a tough 59-57 loss to No. 1 seed Kansas despite a tremendous NCAA Tournament run by star guard Stephen Curry, who became a first-round draft pick by the Golden State Warriors the next year.
