Highest-Scoring Bowl Game

Texas Bowl: Texas Tech vs Ole Miss

A bloated scoreboard should feature in this game between two teams with extensive bowl game resumes. The Ole Miss Rebels (8-4) make their 39th bowl appearance with a noble 24-14 record in postseason action. The Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-5) will join them with a less impressive 15-23 record in bowl performances. The Rebels will be looking to redeem themselves after last year’s 21-7 Sugar Bowl loss to the Baylor Bears. The Red Raiders aim to defend their bowl game win streak after controlling last season’s Liberty Bowl in a 34-7 victory over the Mississippi State Bulldogs.

A lot of back and forth on the scoreboard and on the field is to be expected. Ole Miss averages 31.9 points per game (ranked 30th in the country), while Texas Tech is not far behind with 30.9 PPG, ranking 35th. While both offenses are notably hot and no strangers to tallying up points, the lack of defensive strength will be another reason the scoreboard is well-lit.

The Rebels allow 26.1 points per game, placing them just beyond the middle rankings of Division 1. But that number has climbed significantly to 32 PPG during a three-game skid. The Red Raiders give up a considerably worse 31.3 PPG and don’t figure to improve with LB Tyree Wilson opting out to declare for the NFL draft. The senior was second in the Big 12 with seven sacks in 10 games, and his absence represents a big hit for an already struggling defense. A woeful defense combined with a solid offense is a recipe for a lot of action on the field and on the scoreboard.

The Pick: Texas Tech vs Ole Miss To Be Highest-Scoring Bowl Game (+1200)

Highest-Scoring New Year’s Six Bowl Game

Orange Bowl: Tennessee vs Clemson

There are two factors at play in this matchup that in combination will result in a high-scoring finish to the Orange Bowl.

The No. 6 Tennessee Volunteers (10-2) posted their best record since 2007, put up a league-high 45.7 PPG and hiked that number to 53.3 PPG over their last three appearances. Their opponents, the ACC champion and No. 10-ranked Clemson Tigers (11-2), can keep up at that pace, averaging 34.7 PPG.

The top offensive weapons for the Vols and Tigers are expected to be on the field. Clemson RB Will Shipley, named to the All-ACC first team, rushed for over 1,100 yards and scored 15 touchdowns this season. Tennessee WR Jalin Hyatt is just as reliable for aerial plays, pocketing over 1,200 yards and 15 touchdowns. Expect the stars to shine for one final performance.

However, both teams are also stepping onto the field without the quarterbacks who led them to the bowl game. Tennessee’s Hendon Hooker, who had the second-best QBR in the country at 89.4, is done for the season after the senior suffered an ACL injury a few weeks ago. Clemson’s DJ Uiagalelei, meanwhile, has taken a trip to the transfer portal after being sat to end his inconsistent year. Now, freshman Cade Klubnik will toss for Clemson while senior Joe Milton steps in for Tennessee.

In Milton’s last appearance, he completed just over 50 percent of his throws for 147 yards and a single touchdown in a 56-0 blowout of the Vanderbilt Commodores. He’s earned a touchdown in each of his last four performances. Klubnik, in his first start against the North Carolina Tar Heels, completed a whopping 83 percent of his passes for 279 yards and a touchdown. I expect both signal-callers to be determined to prove they are more valuable than being just a second-stringer.

The Pick: Orange Bowl To Be Highest-Scoring New Year’s Six Bowl Game (+275)

Lowest-Scoring Bowl Game

Music City Bowl: Iowa vs Kentucky

I don’t think it takes much of an expert to realize that this matchup has the solid potential of easily being the lowest-scoring game of the bowl season. Why is it so obvious? The Kentucky Wildcats (21.3 PPG) represent the worst offensive group in the SEC and the Iowa Hawkeyes (18.4 PPG) are the worst in the Big Ten. So, based simply on that, you know the scoreboard might not be that busy.

If you weren’t convinced, don’t worry – I wasn’t finished. While the Hawkeyes offense is brutal, their defense is what carries the load for them, restricting opponents to 15.5 PPG, the sixth-lowest number in the nation. So, the Wildcats will barely be touching the end zone but I also wouldn’t rely on Iowa burying Kentucky in points.

The Pick: Music City Bowl To Be Lowest-Scoring Bowl Game (+900)
