2020 Grammy Awards Betting Odds: The Time Is Now For Billie Eilish

Grammys 2019 Betting Odds November 26, 2019

Music lovers and award show connoisseurs will be stoked for the 62nd annual Grammy Awards taking place at Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 26, 2020, and one artist speaking the truth leads all musicians with nine nominations.

The “Truth Hurts” rapper/singer Lizzo is a mainstay on the charts and also in the four major Grammy Award categories: Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best New Artist. But Lizzo’s popularity pales in comparison to the wunderkind Billie Eilish, who is an odds-on favorite to take two of those awards.

The 17-year-old released her debut album “When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” in March 2019 featuring the smash hit “Bad Guy” that hit the top of the charts.

That track is nominated for both Song of the Year and Record of the Year, although she’ll have heavy competition in the record category from Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” that broke the record for consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

Bettors can also wager on whether Eilish goes for the sweep and nabs Best Song, Record, Album and Best New Artist all in the same year with the odds at +600 that she accomplishes this rare feat. It’s worth noting that in 62 years, only 10 artists have ever been nominated for each of the Big Four categories in the same year and Christopher Cross in 1981 is the only artist to ever pull off the sweep.

Album of the Year

Billie Eilish is a -220 favorite to win Album of the Year with “When We Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?” and it will be pretty difficult to knock her off this platform. The album had six songs to chart on Billboard and if Iain MacMillan doesn’t like it, you know it’s a decent album.

In an average year of pop music, Eilish wouldn’t likely be the favorite but this year’s competition isn’t as stellar as Lizzo’s “Cuz I Love You” has the next-best odds at +400 while Ariana Grande’s “Thank U, Next” is third on the list with odds at +475. The rest of the nominees are indie pop or alternative records, like Lana Del Rey’s “Norman F***ing Rockwell,” that typically don’t win this coveted award. Take a punt on Lizzo’s album if you‘re like ole’ Iain and not feeling this album.

Best New Artist

If you’re already turned off by reading about Billie Eilish, don’t worry, we’re almost done. JUST KIDDING! Eilish is the focal point of this article because she’s also a heavy fave to win Best New Artist at -325, making her the biggest favorite in any of the four categories. Next on the list is Lizzo again at +150 with Lil Nas X at +1000 and those three are likely the only nominees that bettors should consider.

If Eilish was to win both Best New Artist and Album of the Year, she would be the fourth artist of all time to achieve this feat and the first since Norah Jones in 2003.

Record of the Year

The only category of the four that I would recommend fading Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy” for is Record of the Year and that’s because “Old Town Road” was a smash hit by Lil Nas X. The pop record with a country vibe was easily the song of the summer and those songs usually have a great chance to take this award.

If you go back as far as 2010 and consider the songs that have won this award, each one of them was considered an anthem that spoke to everyone like Get Lucky by Daft Punk or Hello by Adele. And you couldn’t go anywhere in 2019 without hearing Old Town Road at least once in an evening.

I know this is loose handicapping but Bad Guy was a song that mostly had a niche following before it steadily gathered momentum and reached the top of the charts, whereas Old Town Road had a meteoric rise and was a banger upon first listen.

Song of the Year

Finally, the one category that doesn’t have an odds-on favorite, this would be one of the times where bettors need to hammer “Bad Guy” by Billie Eilish because “Old Town Road” isn’t nominated due to the parameters set out by the Recording Academy. “Truth Hurts” by Lizzo is actually a slight favorite over “Bad Guy” and outside of these two songs, no other nominee is worth considering.

Song of the Year is meant to be an award for the composers and the fact that “Bad Guy” was written and arranged by Eilish and her brother Finneas O’Connell makes me think voters will give it to the duo because of their youth and the sonic layers of the production that is typically reserved for mature artists.
